Useless treasure?

Well, I've searched and I can't find anybody commenting on this phenomenom - I'm playing 'Age of Discovery' in the Conquests series - I can't seem to do anything with 'treasure', either found in a city or created by my own city developments.

I can't move it in any direction, even along roads, can't move it onto any kind of ship, absolutely nada. It's driving me crazy - what am I missing?

I've never tried. The civilopedia says you have to "seize it with a military unit and escort it back to your capital city".

A quick Google of this site gives this thread with this gem:

Civ3 Conquests - Bug Reports said:
Not a bug

In order to pick up treasure you need to seize it with a land unit. Move a unit to the city the treasure is in, activate the unit and there should be a button, seize treasure. Once you have the treasure the unit carrying it will be indicated in red if you right click on it and with !!! in the unit box in bottom right of the screen.

Hope that helps

Hope that helps :p

Magic!! I thought i'd searched pretty thoroughly to find the essential clue! :goodjob:

Many thanks - I get no points for observation of that extra icon!

Don't kniow about treasure, but Aspyr just admitted in an email that the Princess option is for PC only. I suspect that the same is true for "treasures". Once again we have been granted the priviledge of buying a partially crippled game. Still waiting for the map/game editor that according to the packaging was included with Civ III.

Hi James,

This is unfortunately left over from the PC version of the game. There is no button to actually 'capture' the princess. It seems that all you can do is simply take the city she is in.

I'm sorry for any confusion this has caused.

Here's a thumbnail (click on it to see it bigger) of a quick demo I just did on my G3 playing C3C. I used the Three Sisters conquest because I knew I'd have a Princess to capture right away; the procedure is the same regardless.

The first shot is of the Princess; clever boys will clearly see I'm on a Mac.

The second shot shows the Archer that's going to sweep her off her feet, all Robin Hood like. In the screen shot I've added a big red circle to point out the "Take the fair maiden by the hand/grab the booty, me bucko" button.

The Third shot shows him next turn, having moved. You know he's got her in his kit bag because (1) there's those exclamation points (circled), and (2) if you right click on him to see his info, it's red (just like that big honkin' arrow I added in case someone doesn't know where to look).

QED: You can capture a Princess on a Mac version of Conquests.

What happens to the Princess/Treasure varies by the specific conquest. He can't drop her just anywhere. The specific Conquest should tell you where is ok in the introduction; the proper buttons only appear when they're useable. Didn't include a shot of that, because it might take an hour of play, and by then I'd be having so much fun throwing Princessii into volcanos I'd forget I'm meant to be helping someone here.

OK but does it work in Civ 3 Complete? that is if you start a new game and tell it to generate a map and allow for capture the princess.

According to Aspyr the answer is no. And when I captured a city and a Princess in a game I started, although there was a dialogue that appeared when I captured the city and the princess icon changed color, darned if I ever saw a button that allowed me to pick her up and carry her off.

But I've been wrong before.

Trust me, so have Aspyr Support :p

However, if you read what Aspyr said, and believe it, you'll see that they claim it came along with the PC software they ported. So I'm not sure I understand your comment that "Once again we have been granted the priviledge of buying a partially crippled game"

Mac C3C = Civ 3 Complete

Complete includes Conquests and PTW; you're talking Conquests, right?

Did you put a unit capable of carrying her in the same tile and then activate it?
the proper buttons only appear when they're useable.

I was curious. So I've played a small map, with Capture the Princess enabled. I've played it through to the point where I have an archer, a couple of horses, and a Chinese Princess in the Chinese capital. None of my units can pick the Princess up, they've tried all their best chat up lines and failed miserably. No button :(

So I think jhbiv is correct. You can only capture princesses in fairy tale scenarios. I would also guess that this is the way the game arrived from Firaxis. Blue Monkey has demonstrated that all the bits are present in the Mac version, and it's highly unlikely that anything Aspyr did would have changed the details within the game logic.

I see that you guys are not playing pre-set scenarios, like the Conquests provided by Firaxis. That makes me suspect that the problem is related to our lack of an editor. If I remember what I've read over in the Creation & Customization forum, there are several settings that must match that are set in the editor (ie the Princess piece must be made "pickupable", at least one unit must have the ability to pick-up set, a goal location needs to be set, etc.)

I think that's the point that jhbiv is making.

The "Capture the Princess" option is a checkbox in the starting screens, and that's what I used to enable that victory condition in a non-scenario game. I would expect that checkbox to set the necessary conditions in the game so that a capture would be possible. If this is not the case then IMHO I agree with jhbiv that it's a bug. Where I disagree with him is that he thinks Aspyr added the bug specially for Mac users, whereas I interpret their Support e-mail as meaning the PC version works the same.

Just to put this one to bed, if you Google this site for "Capture the Princess" you will find several C3C Bug reports confirming that this was a known issue way before Conquests ended up on the Mac.
