Using naval units for defending cities

I would like to know if a naval unit placed on a city can defend that city from attacks by enemy ground units.

I think they can only defend cities against attacks from enemy naval units. Am I wrong?

It can defend against land units. A vet. battleship on a mountain city will yeild a combat strength of 56 or so. Just try taking that city, mwaha.

This is great! It means that land units like riflemen or mechanized infantry are almost useless, at least in coastal cities.

Yup. But remember that ships take much resource to build. So sometimes it's easier to pop out a couple mech. infs to guard ya city.
