Using resources outside of the fat cross?

Hello all,

I searched for this, but couldn't find a concise answer. I know that if a resource isn't inside your fat cross, then you can't work the tile, but can you still use it?

For example, if I have gold, stone, iron, and horses outside of my fat cross, can I still get the +5 commerce from gold, wonder build time reduction from stone, and the military units from the iron and horses?

If so, do I just have to build roads from my city to that tile? Or do I need roads and the improvment (mine, quarry, etc)?

Thanks,

Rex

Your need roads and the improvement.

You don't get the commerce/production/food bonus of the tile. But you do get the resource. (For example, gold will give you 1 happy, 2 with forge, and build the shadowgen paya double speed).

You can't work tiles outside your BFC of your cities. So, if you mine the gold, you won't get the +5 commerce from the tile. However, hook up the improved tile to your empire and you WILL get the extra :) from the gold, and the faster Gold-reliant Wonders.

Thank you for your replies.

This info should keep me from clicking 'Regenerate Map' so many times when I start a new game :).

I can't figure out why I'm so tempted to keep restarting until I get an uber-starting location... It's not like I can only play the game x number of times, and the whole point of playing is to have a challenge, so why the heck do I do it
