you proabalby wouldn't belive me if a told you but thruh be told, dispite having this game since about amonth after it came out, i have yet to use slavery. something about it just bothers me. goofy eh? i mean its just a game and i can't even see the chian gang, yet i can't bring myself to use slavery on my own civilization. and i'm probalby missing out on a lot by doing that too. anyone else not use slavery for moral reasons?

I whip my population as much as I can. Every turn, as much as I can get away with.

I'll whip them for buildings; I'll whip a library even if I don't need it if the population seems to be flourishing, just to spite them. I'll whip monuments, granaries, courthouses, and you know what I like whipping most? Jails. Because it lets those little Civ People know who's who.

I whip them for units. Oh, do I ever. I hold down the Alt key while clicking on the city text, so I can select all cities, and whip simultaneously. I don't think a war is successful unless I've halved my own population in the process.

Don't start this again. Last time, people were concerned about not using State Property because "communism is evil" :mischief:

I don't get this, really. If most people let real life decide what is "morally acceptable" in Civ, they would almost always end up playing Gandhi/Lincoln/Roosevelt with the "Uni.Suf - Free Speech - Emancipation - Environ. - Free Rel." civic row :)

I use slavery because it is the popular concept at the time and historical, too. However, I never result to whipping. The affects aren't that good - unless it's for a wonder. ;)

What are you talking about?

Whipping is less effective for wonders (the population to hammers conversion rate is worse). The results of whipping an army are almost always good.

I'd say it's usually more effective to get a Wonder than the consolation prize. Sometimes people don't mind the cash instead though.

ya whipping is a must for me...i'm well past over feeling guilty for it too! what good is all that population if you cant sacrafice it hahahaha

besides if you let those ingratefull swine live, all they do is complain and refuse to work...i prefer to use the whip to make that mule listen!

it is much more efficiant to farm up and whip units and buildings than it is to rely on hammers anyway...

Whipping can be extremely advantageous, especially when doing it early with a low population and with a granary. You get 30 hammers (adjust for game speed) for one population, when the population took less than 30 food to make!

As others have mentioned. What else are you going to do with the whining population? It's so powerful that not using it is gimping your play.

Moral reasons?

The whole concept of ruling until modern time can have some moral issues. Why do you even declare a war? Just to get some luxuries, more cities? Except resource requirements like Iron, Oil, etc, if you attack for any other reason, there can someone have moral issues on that?

Come-on, this is just a game. Play it as it is. Slavery had been a part of the normal world for until recent history. If you are playing for thousands of years, accept whatever happened in those thousands of years. This is something happened in the world, we are just trying to test the time, and rewriting the history in our minds. But obviously, we can't change a bit of the real history.

Have a great time.

slavery is a mechanism for converting food into hammers.

plus everyone loves the pyramids and the other ancient wonders, but of course they were probably built largely by slaves

slavery was a historical reality (and probably continues in certain parts of the world) and civ is a game with historical themes. thus it makes sense to me that throughout the historical time periods where slavery was an historical reality, this civic is prominent in the game. later in the game if you keep trying to use it the :( from emancipation becomes crippling.

seems good to me

More importantly than historical reality, I just like the button that instantly turns lazy citizens into axemen or catapults :)

indeed  it's like: "look you unhappy citizens, here's an axe or a wood contraption with some heavy rocks. go and take out your frustration on those baddies over yonder"

I only started to use slavery a couple of weeks ago (and I also bought the game when it came out). It wasn`t really a moral/historical thing, it just kinda felt wrong to destroy part of my civilization to get something quicker... I guess I was a too good leader ;) . Since I started whipping I cant stop :D . It really is very useful, especially when you run into unhappyness or have to fight a war.

slavery can also save your skin when you get caught with your pants down when the enemy troops come knocking on your door. i'm a decent player, but sometimes i get a little behind in defences and slavery works great as a safety net...just whip out a few extra defenders to buy you some extra time! sucks that the ai figured it out hahahaha

too many times i've switched out of slavery and i get caught with no way of stopping invaders, wether i have my troops in someone elses territory, or just was caught unprepared....

I am one of those who knows about but very rarely use the whip---I keep on forgetting it. Only recently when I wanted to try out the no-cottage strategy did I realize how powerful slavery is. I had one city with only five plot hammers, three of which are plain plains plots. But it had two seafood resources and ended up being one of my top production cities.

Anyway, back on topic, one just need to remember this is a game and keep the game to the game :P

That's true for me as well. I am more of a builder type at heart and I always thought I should let my cities grow as fast as they like, happiness and health be damned. I also always wondered how the hell everybody else is able to build such big armies.

Now, the 2-pop cata+axe queue whip has become my trademark. :p

I started using slavery about a week ago, and it's great for building up infastructure. I still haven't worked up to whipping out armies, but I'll get there eventually.
