Nvidia GeForce Go5700:

Installed the entire game and then the v1.09 patch.

First time I tried to go to a foreign advisor, I had a CTD. On trying to restart afterwards, the game immediately would CTD every time with the message:
"Your movies are not installed correctly."

No longer even gets to the game menu! Everything is corrupted now and has to be reinstalled.

You're not saying whether the game worked before you installed the patch. You should look for a driver upgrade on the NVIDIA homepage. Remember that if you search for an upgrade automatically, XP will sometimes say that there is not a better one available, but if there is a newer one than yours it probably is better!

1. Actually, using the automated install for the game did not work. This is because the automated install continually tried to install a new NVIDIA driver for the Go5700. What I mean by that is that as soon as the CD would run, it would try to install a new NVDIA driver and ask for the machine to be rebooted afterwards. After rebooting, I would run the CD again, and again it would try to install a new NVIDIA driver! This could cycle forever without any progress on the Civ4 install. So instead, I went and installed the very latest NVIDIA driver myself (Forceware 81.95) and then "opened" the CD, went into the directx 9 directory, manually installed it, and then after a reboot, when and manually ran the Civ4 setup file. This elaborate procedure resulted in a perfectly working Civ4 on the machine. Updated it to v1.09.

2. After updating to v1.09, it was working fine for about 10min until the CTD happened. Afterwards, it was as I described (the error message about movies not being installed correctly and a corrupted game that had to be deleted and reinstalled).

solution, install v 1.0 and don't update :) you people are all so funny, didnt noone of you ever played beta releases? in a beta, once you get a working version, you just leave it there and first try to find the minor bugs, others will find the bugs in this new version automatically..since civ4 is still a pre beta, i'd just say, if we all play this pre beta version, maybe the beta stage of the game will be somewhere near february 2006 :) then 2 or 3 months and we're outta beta to get the final release with only a couple minor bugs :) anyway, installing a upgraded version which causes CTD, it will disallow you to play, it's anoying, destroying your fun, and after a while you stop playing it..so just switch back to the version that worked :) then you can look for the other bugs :)

Unfortunately, I think the Gamespy lobby forces those who play multiplayer to upgrade or not have access. No choice.
