Van01 - A Newbie Hope

I've played, but the report will have to wait until tomorrow morning.

But here's the save for your viewing.

Foreign dealings

Civ4ScreenShot0000-2.jpg

Philosophy for liberalism and compass for cothons, since we'll soon have coastal access, finally. The trade is grossly in Joao's favor beaker-wise, but that's why it earned us +1 in relations for fair and fortright trade.

Joao canceled the sugar and banana deals and we have nothing to trade for them, so Mother Russia will have to supply us with the necessities of a growing empire.

Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

Another lopsided trade. The updated world map was nice, but the main goal was improving relations. Freddy is now friendly towards us, so this paid off.

At the start of the round I took a look at our army and saw that it wasn't going anywhere. So I signed a cease fire with Cathy. I was a bit worried about our stack, because they were stuck on that hill and couldn't get to Yekaterinburg without declaring war. Fortunately a nearby Russian city popped it's borders and teleported the stack to safety.

Domestics

I'm a bit torn on glenmetz's wonder projects. On the other hand, we'll get a GP in Carthage next turn and thanks to Notre Dame, we'll get +2 :) in all our cities in five turns. So they're both nice to have.

It's just that spending hammers on not-absolutely-crucial-for-winning-the-game wonders during wartime isn't so great. Troops are a much higher priority. You can't get away with this kind of stuff on higher difficulities.

Well, we'll soon have the big cathedral and then Carthage can focus on lacking infrastructure, such as a forge, couple monasteries and an university.

Speaking of universities, I researched education after banking. We'll get liberalism in ten turns. Let's discuss the free tech.

I whipped the grocer in Hadrumetum. A forge will be ready soon, after which another university would be nice.

Mutal is being squeezed pretty bad (apparently a culture bomb from Pacal), but the situation is slowly getting better. Don't whip the monastery there, save the lashes for the university and it's +3 culture.

Mayapan, Hippo and Utica (now cottage-free) have been cranking out a steady stream of units, and should keep at it for some time. After we have enough offensive units to finish the Russian campaign, they should start on modern garrison troops for our core cities and aquisitions. The garrison troops should include some spies, ideally one for every city. We still have to work on our power rating.

One of the three should also build Heroic epic at some point. I'm thinking Hippo but that's just my preference.

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

I planted those colony signs in case we need more resources for trading. We have more pressing concerns now though, such as

War

Our boys in Yekaterinburg.

Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

The next player can resume hostilities even before pressing enter. Take most of the longbows with the stack to garrison captured cities, but leave a mobile reserve of 1-2 knights in Yekaterinburg to handle any mounted pillagers. Cathy still has a stack floating around but the moron hasn't healed the troops, so there's no threat.

Preliminary battle plans.

North:

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

South:

Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

The north is obviously the priority here. We could even vassalise the south, if Cathy is willing to capitulate after being cut down to size.

There lies Moscow, soon to fall to our mighty armies. (Note the anachronistic Scotland Yard skyscraper. :crazyeye: )

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

According to the roster I'm up. However Splime and Dawn both missed their sets so if one (or both) want to go before me that's fine.

I'll claim the save tomorrow evening if neither has posted a 'got it' before then.

Grab the save and look around.
Move two swords from Hadrum towards Hippo for staging. Will probably upgrade them to Mace when they arrive.
Found Cathy's force at the fort:
Vanor01Cathytroops.jpg

#321 Cathy comes asking for us to cancel deals with Freddie. While I may be a sucker for redhead I send her away. Needless to say she is now a scorned redhead.
Vanor01MadCathy.jpg

We did pop a GS in Carthage. I'll pause here to discuss how to use him.
He'll bulb us +2256:science: toward Printing Press. Or build an Academy in Hadrum (my vote).

Also, the war plans showed a force coming out of Hippo to take Cathy's southern cities. Right now that is only two swords (soon to be maces), a knight, and one siege machine. It may be that I do some more army construction and had the fight over to the next person. We really need more maces and siege. She doesn't currently "have too much on her hands" right now so we may have a few more turns before she declares on us.

I don't think we should go to war until we are 100% sure we can conquer her completely. We don't want to go to war with her AGAIN in the future.

Academy sounds good as well

Start the war now. Our stack in Yekaterinburg is strong enough to take at least Novgorod and Moscow. While it gets reinforced and heads for Rostov, new troops can open up a new front and go directly at Cathy's northwestern cities.

Don't concentrate any more troops in the south than necessary to handle the possible pillagers. Knights perform well there. Those cities have no production and can be picked off at our leisure.

Academy in Hadrumetum with the GS.

Well, I did a combination of the advice. I'm very conservative when it comes to war - must have overwhelming forces before I fight. Not always the best approach, I know.

#321 Settle the GS in Hadrum as was the agreed move.
#322 Cathy offers us rice for corn. I can do that.
#323 Cathy gets pushy again and demands Philo. Nope.
#325 Notre Dame completed and a forge started in Carthage.
#327 Make a deal with Jao, his banana for some wine.
#329 Make a deal with Freddie, his gold for some wine.

We're going to finish off Liberalism next turn, so I stop here. Need to discuss what tech:
Nationalism (4158 beakers)
Chemistry (4158 beakers)
Printing Press (3696 beakers)
Economics (3234 beakers)

We have a decent size force poised for a southern push. Also have some home-front troops ready to be finished for defense if Cathy sends some our way. The Northern Army as been added to and is ready in Yak.

I have to hand this off now as I just go assigned to a big project at work.

Got it.

Regarding liberalism I'd just finish it and take nationalism then research economics for the free GM. If we're going to war with Russia then we should be focussing on military builds so Taj may have to wait a few turns.

One possibility is to take PP for free, research economics and then head for democracy, possibly building the Taj for a big civics switch.

EDIT-I'm talking out of my arse here. Of course take nationalism.

Played 10 turns up to 1595...

1545. Rearrange stacks; combine all 1 move units into one stack, form a seperate stack of knights.
Declare on Cat.

1550 Lib>Nat>Economics (9turns)

1570. We lose Yekatsinburg.

1575. We capture Novgorod (Hagia Sophia).
We recapture Yekastinburg. This happens:
v4a0000-1.jpg

v4b0000-1.jpg

(oops. raze Yek and get half a dozen partisan maces  ).

1590. Cut a deal with Fred:
v4c0000-1.jpg

1595. Economics. Get free GM. Start PP, no beakers.
GG in Mayapan.

Stack of about 20 units 2 turns from Moscow which is defended by CG2 LB + crap.

Been pillaging down south. Possibly a mistake if we're aiming on capturing them eventually (and we probably should).

Overall we're well ahead on techs but trailing on demographics.

Cat is looking vulnerable atm so keep crushing.

Maybe send GM on TM up north and use cash to upgrade swords and axes.

Probably best to use GG as a super medic.

We have a choice of tech paths. We can be civilised and chase democracy or we can be militaristic and go chem>milsci>steel.

Haven't started Taj but no-one on our continent has nationalism yet.

Overall we lost 10 units (4mace,3 knights, 2 LB, Xbow) and killed 27 (2 mace, 6 LB, 4Xbow, 6 cats, treb, 4 chariots, 4HA).

Not a great turn but not a bad one either.

IHT - Hit enter.

Turn 340 - Move stack near Moscow, make Musket into super medic, and start moving units towards Moscow.

Turn 341 - Crossbow in Hippo -> Musket.

Turn 342 - Musket -> Musket in Mayapan and Carthage. Bomb Moscow down to 58%

IBT Crossbow killed by Horse Archer and knight killed by Crossbow.

Turn 343 - Bomb Moscow to 21% and the Great Merchant arrives in Berlin. Start trade mission and we gain 1950 gold.

gretmerch.jpg

Turn 344 - Bomb Moscow and reduce defense to 0%, begin attack with Trebs. All 4 trebs withdrew! :) Sometimes it's better to be lucky then good as they say. :) We lost a Mace and a sword in the attack, and killed off everything and take Moscow. However I messed up a bit, it took the whole stack to take Moscow, and only the pike was able to move into the city.

IBT - Pike dies to mace and they retake Moscow.

Turn 345 - Lose a Cat in taking back Moscow again, but this time I can move more units in and it stays ours.

Turn 346 - Move stack into Moscow to begin healing.

Turn 347 - Make some more Muskets.

Turn 348 - all units healed up and move towards Rostov.

Turn 349 - Deal with Joao II canceled of Wine for Banana, so I offer him wine and marble for the Banana, as it helps with our health. Move stack to hill near Rostov to get ready to attack the city.

Turn 450 - I didn't mean to hit enter here. But I did... Printing press is in and I start research on Mil Trad, but no beakers have been made for it yet, so it can be switched.

I didn't move anything so all units should have full movement yet. The stack is ready to start attacking Rotov.

In Rotov there's 3 Longbow, 2 Knights and 2 Crossbow.
In our stack we have 5 Knights, 3 Musket, 7 Mace, 1 Sword, 1 Cat, 3 Axe and 11 Trebs. There's 2 more muskets in Moscow that can be moved up as well as more on the way.

I pulled the knights from down south up to help with the northern war. Didnt' make sense to me to pillage stuff we'd want ourself soon.

Going ok. Maybe next time we capture a city it might be worth spending cash on upgrading CR2+ axes and swords into proper maces.

If we're going all civilised and democratic then we should be able to polish off Russia but will have to wait before we crush the rest of the continent. My preference would be to go for military research. If we've got PP and a decent supply of trebs we could head for RP and rifling.

Going ok. Maybe next time we capture a city it might be worth spending cash on upgrading CR2+ axes and swords into proper maces.

I tried to upgrade the sword to a mace, but couldn't. When I selected the unit there was no upgrade icon for it.

To upgrade the unit it has to be in our own territory and have a movement point, and of course we need the money to pay for the upgrade.

Crushing a continent with rifles is always fun.

Also read in a thread that we need the relevant resource available in the city where we're upgrading the unit(s) so if Moscow was totally surrounded by Rusian culturewe couldn't upgrade. Hopefully Rostov will have a sea-route via Moscow for iron or copper.

RP>rifling does sound good.
