Van01 - A Newbie Hope

Okay, I managed to get some turns done and now we have a decision to make.

IHT #225 775AD
Pulled the chariots from the West and SouthWest back into our borders. Jao can bust his own fog and it saves us a whole 2:commerce:
Attack Pacal's settler party with our axes and capture the settler/worker.
This gives us a GG in Utica.

#226 790AD
Cathy asks for Rice for Wine. Sure why not. I'm a sucker for redheads.
Our spy puts Mayapan in revolt and I start the attack. We lose some cats with one retreating and in the end Pacal has a wounded longbow and axe.
Settle the GG in Carthage as an Instructor.

#227 805AD
Finish off the defenders in Mayapan and occupy the city. I debated about whether to raze the city or keep it. Kept it as Cathy was encroaching on our space and it provides a nice border city.

Do we wish to keep the war with Pacal going? We are down on cats, but have some axes (?) headed north. The army is healing in Mayapan.

I won't be able to continue until Friday so glenmetz can pick it up that's fine with me.
Here is the save:

Well my thought is, that as long as all we're losing is cat's then and we can replace them, we should keep going.

If we start losing axes, cav, ect... because we can't make enough cat's to keep up then we should ask for peace and hopefully get something nice out of it.

Cats cost 40 hammers, axes cost 35. Agree with building more cats as long as we're still fighting but they're not the cheapest option.

Color me corrected then. :)

I guess I'm not used to the early wars yet. Typically I don't do much fighting until the middle ages, with longbow, maces and such.

But does it make sense to keep pushing this war? I think so, as long as it's going well. But on the other hand our major goal was to capture the holy city and the great wall. Eliminating Pacal may or may not be the best option right now.

For that mater what are peoples opinion on what victory to go for? If we want a warmonger victory then taking out Pacal might make more sense then if we're going to aim for a peaceful victory.

Regardless of which victory we're going for I think we're beginning to run out of steam. I'd vote for going for peace, developing our cities and then think about another war.

Lets discuss, Pig says Peace. Anyone else?

If we do make peace, I better get the offensive next time around. I like swinging my club around.

We have a decent chunk of land now, so I doubt that there's anything to be gained from pushing the war. Let's settle down and use the financial trait to out-tech the AI. We'll fight our next war with with a tech edge.

Peace sounds good. Need to get some culture into Pacal's previous cities. Between Pacal himself and Cathy we're going to have some tight cultural boundaries.

Sorry folks, Washing Machine blew up last night, didn't get done with my personal crap last night until about 8-9 and was too exhausted to get involved. I will play tonight, any thing else to consider before I run?

Had a look at the save. Pacal will give feudalism and mono for peace which seems ok. Jo looks the furthest behind techwise so maybe get calendar from him in trade.

Techwise we could go for literature next and try to nab Great Library. Could either go for music for free GA or make a start on liberalism beeline.

Worth checking if there's any happy resources waiting to be hooked up or available in trade. Aim for growing cities peacefully (and hope we pop a prophet for Hindu shrine).

Trade for Calender from Jo for HBR and Monarch
Make peace with Pacal for Fuedalism and Monotheism
Research to Lit
I adopt Organized Religion as well now that we have Mono

OK, time for a stop, Pacal wants to become a Vassal state. That was quick, this was on the IBT for my 1st turn. Whats everyone think?

I agree with Pigswill. A vassal at this stage would be more trouble then it's worth. It's always possible he'll break off at some point in the future and cause problems for us.

Not to mention we would inherent the opinion everyone else has of Pacal which could be a problem in of itself. Not to mention the possibility of getting drawn into a war because of him.

I think by taking those two cities we gained a ton, and put a major hurt on Pacal. I wouldn't say he's effectively out of the picture yet. But I don't think he'll ever become a major power now.

The only down side I can see of not making him a vassal is he may ask someone else to become theirs. But that isn't enough of a down side to agree to him right now.

lurker's comment: does he want to vassal or is it a capitulation?
If it's a capitulation, I'd take it. He won't break free, if you don't let him, and if you're nice to him you can get him to friendly quite soon.
+ he can't declare war on you even if you annoy him

I believe it's becoming a Vassal, as Glenmetz signed a peace deal with him on his turn, then on the AI's turn Pacal came to us asking to be a vassal.

Even though he can't break free, we still have to deal with the opinion everyone else had of him right? I mean if someone hated Pacal, they'd not be happy with us if he's our vassal.

sure, but are you aiming at diplomacy?
