Vanilla saved games, scenario, mods crash after loading

I'm getting quite an infuriating result from the nov 1st update: the game always freeze right after loading an old save, a scenario (the Mongol, retail version, to be precise) or a mod game. To be specific, the Civilization 5 program stop responding right after loading the save, where the "Loading" bar transforms into the "Continue your journey" button. It happens with saves that worked fine before i downloaded the update, hence why i believe it might be the cause of the problem.

I tried to verify the files integrity (which didn't solve anything, even though it always show 2 files damaged), i also tried to lower the graphics, in case something happened with my computer (even if it worked fine before), and it still freezes on the same exact spot.

On a side note, the mods always re-install themselves when i go check them, since i installed the patch (something i've seen mentionned in another thread).

I'm getting a bit rilled up, since i got the game only a few days ago: it worked fine and played great. Steam auto-installed a patch, and now the game's unplayable. I'd appreciate any head's up or information on this (support has yet to answer my questions, so i opted to ask it out on this forum)

PS: In case it might help, the game's vanilla on DX 9. My old saves weren't used with mods either.

This is the same problem I've been having (minus the pea soup terrain) ( http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=479397 )... I don't know if you can run it in DX10/11 mode but that works for mine only with graphics problems (which is why I was running in DX9 mode).

I'm hoping they figure out a way to salvage these save games.

Starting a new one seems to work, though.

DX10/11 isn't readily available, but i'm working on it, thanks for the info.

My new games indeed work, but if i try to, let's say, start it in the modern era, it'll freeze on the second turn or something like that.

All in all, though, i'm glad to not be the only one with this problem. I was getting kind of worried.

I'm having the same problem. Post-patch I am unable to load any saved games on Direct9. Trying to get the Direct11 version to work to see if that is any better.

Could you please post the Genghis save here? I would love to take a look. Also, please post your dxdiag.

I'm attempting to attach my save game - Kamehameha ... crashes in DX9 mode. Nevermind. Too big by a few hundred k...

I bought the game about 4 days ago, and i never used Steam much so i'll have to clarify a few things since i don't understand.

First, i don't have a Genghis saved game, i just cannot start the Scenario. Both loading the saves from a single player vanilla game and STARTING the scenario doesn't work. Or maybe i understood wrong. What is the file you want to see then?

Also, i'm not very knowledgeable about computers, so what in the dxdiag do you want me to post?

At a quick glance on the steam community forum, crashes seem to be due to a problem between the DX9 version and the new update.

I think he means one of the saves which worked prior, but don't load now anymore.

Please see here for instructions.

That is the case for some users, but not sure if that is also the problem for you.
Easiest way to find that out: Start with DX11.

Alright, thanks for the infos the J.

I've attached one of the saves i'm a 100% sure worked before the update, and my dxdiag text (some bits are in french but the important stuff isn't, so it shouldn't be a problem).

I can't use DX11 since i've only got the service pack 1, and apparently i need 2 or greater for the DX10/11 option at startup. (If i remember correctly, i had installed the SP2 a long time ago and it completely broke my pc, so i had to restore it back to SP1. I might be wrong though)

I mean, it's nonesensical that i couldn't play the DX9 anymore just because of an update. Also, they're eerily silent about it.

If i don't have the choice, i'll get the DX10/11 to work (the game's just so great), but i really feel i shouldn't have to do that just to play a game that should already be playable (and WAS playable for the few days beforehand).

Don't blame them for their attempts of optimizing the game ;).
You can't consider and test everything.

Your DxDiag says that your graphics card driver is 2 years old...means you should definitely update it. I think this should be the correct one.

I have the cloud enabled and am attempting to load a cloud save... DX9 mode still consistently crashes. I'll try a couple things (deleting local saves, disabling/enabling cloud) to see if there's a way they're related.

As a side note, I have never gotten the message shown in beginning of the other thread referenced. When it crashes for me, it crashes so badly that I have to go into the task manager and terminate the process.

On my Win8 machine, I actually have to re-boot to get rid of it because it's captured all input (and won't let me click or tab over to the "end process" box).

I wouldn't blame them if they really did optimize the game; the problem is, i paid 35$ for the game 6 days ago, had no problem whatsoever with any of the things enumerated in the update list... So they fixed things i hadn't even seen by completely blocking me from playing. I guess it's logical to fix a game by breaking it. Sorry if i sound a bit pissed, for a lack of words, but if they can't consider that they'll break my game, they shouldn't make me download the update before playing (and then ignore my questions to their support). Let's say, i wouldn't blame them if they put a CAUTION: THIS UPDATE CAN BREAK YOUR GAME warning or something like that (though i do realize that it says it in their contract somewhere). Or, you know, if i could reverse the update to see if that's really the problem.

Lol, sorry, at this point i'm just ranting...:mischief:

I'll update my graphic drivers since you point it out, but i never ever had any graphic problems related to Civ 5.

To answer your second post, i had Steam cloud enabled from the beginning. I'm also always connected when playing. For the rest, i'm not sure which settings you're talking about relating to the thread you linked. Should i check for the extensions? Or is it something else that i missed?

Ditto for me about the DX9 crashes and the lack of error message. I always have to go to the task manager and close since it stops responding. The Civ 5 application also shoots up to 50% UC and just locks there.

I don't have a Win8, so i can't really talk about that...

No, sorry, that was everything.

Guess this here is not the same problem.
Let's see if they can find anything in the saves.

Oh...can you maybe try to load a save from other people?
e.g. the current GOTM savegame?
(if that one is already compatible, don't know)

What's weird is that i can load certain saves, but they're at about 10 turns, still in ancient era. If i try to start something more advanced, like set up a game which start at modern era, or load a scenario or mod who do, it crashes.

Might be something to do with the eras. Or another civilization...

By curiosity, since i'm new to Steam, can i expect an answer from their support (at some point) or do they have a past of ignoring customers?

Since this sounds like it is a Civ5 problem, you shouldn't bother asking the Steam support. It's not their bussiness.

Strange thing about the savegames.
Can you load more advanced saves if you turn down your graphics quality? Because that sounds somehow like a performance problem (looking at the DxDiag...it shouldn't, but well...don't know :dunno:).

Well, i thought since i'm forced to use their client and that they're the one who made me update the game to play, they could help me out a bit...

Also, i tried playing with the graphic settings (had pretty much the same idea you mention), but i found that all the advanced saves AND the scenario crash at the exact same moment, upon the transition between the loading screen and the map screen. The fact that it's always at the exact same spot and that nothing like that happened before hinted to something... not graphic related?

Anyways, thanks for your help. I'll contact 2k support (should've done that from the start, lol silly me).
