So there i was as the number 1 Civ.

I have Mansa and Ghengis in the north and Luis (My first vassal) + other guy i dont remember in the west.

I had already killed the Indian guy before so there were only the 5 of us left.

So what happens is funneh, Mansa gets in a war with Ghengis which are both friendly to me, the war goes on and on and all of the sudden Mansa begs me to become my vassal state.

So i said, sure...and the next turn i find myself at war with Ghengis, so the AI OMGWTFPWN me in that war which i didnt want to be in. <--- Lesson learned

So what happened after was worst still, i managed to practically kill half of Ghengis empire so he also begs me to become my vassal so i say yes, war over.

But that not the end, after i finish the war not 10 turns after it Mansa comes along and tells me he doesnt want to be my vassal anymore...so i go WTFPWN again

So Mansa basically used me to save his butt from Ghengis and then when he was saved he kicked me...humm

So what you do? I used Luis + Ghengis + myself + the other guy which i bribed to totally wipe out the cheating Mansa.

He begged me to become my vassal again like 5 times...but this time..no sir, nada nadita !!!

Lol, good to see some sneeky thinking from the AI :)

I can tell you it "hinted" at intelligence, at least it was more intelligent that me letting myself being dragged into a war and then leaving me to dust.

First experience with vassal states was a interesting one indeed.

The bastage...LOL

KHSOLO, if you make vassal out of someone that your at peace with after ten turns he is free to leave. And if the person that you make your vassal is at war you are draged into the war.

Now if you make a vassal out of someone that you are at war with the only way they can end the deal is if you demand that they give you a resource and they say no(then you would be at war with them), or there territory size reaches 50% of yours. I think that when you where at war with Mansa that when he asked to be your vassal you should have said yes.

I had another Vassal surprise. There I was about midway on the power chart, decided to take on the next guy up because I had a tech edge and he had the Pyramids just sitting there. Took the pyramid city (1 of his 10 cites). Next turn he becomes the vassal of one of the top nations and brings his 'master' into the war with me!

LOL, this is exactly what Mansa did to meh (inverted of course), funny stuff this vassal business.

Heh !!!

In the game I am playing now, on Prince, I am playing as Carthage and my biggest rival is Montezuma (who else?). He was way behind me in score and in the last twenty turns or so has acquired two vassal states: Egypt and China. Certainly improved Monty's score!

Vassal states definitely makes the game more interesting.....the weaker civs have more of an impact in how the game plays out instead of just waiting to be wiped off the map by someone else.

The time is 1200 AD. For ages there were three major powers and a few minor powers living in relative peace.

The three major powers were the Romans, lead by Caesar Augustus, the Mongols lead by Gengis Khan and the great Egyptians lead by myself in te person of Ramesses II.

These three powers were the center of all trade, science and military forces and there was a long term peace.

Suddenly I thought, wouldn't it be nice to have a nice huge big war, against all the minor civilizations. I needed some room to expend and they had another religion. Hmm.. why am I bothering to find some excuses for war

Gendis Khan didn't liked the Arabs that much, so they were exterminated. I didn't liked the Greeks that much, so they were exterminated aswell.

After a while I thought, there are still some angry French dudes. I traded with them, all fine. But the Romans were too quiet. So I wispered in the right ear of Caesar Augustus to attack the French in exchange for two inventions.

Few years later, around 1400 the Romans requested that I cancelled all trade with the french. Ok no harm done, so I agreed with it. About 50 years later the Romans requested me to declare war on the French.

Well I was the source of the war and I was still in search for some more space, so what the hack. War they will get.

Next turn, what happens? The Romans made peace to the French. Thank you very much! Those damn Romans, didn't mobilized any units for the war, they didn't destroyed any units, the didn't attack any city. Nothing, so I wonder who is screwed?

This is a bug, that shouldn't have happened. When a state becomes a vassal of another state, it automatically adopts the diplomatic set-up of the Master, not the other way around. What should have happened was Mansa became your vassal and the war automatically ended, since you were at peace with Genghis.

The weak AI becomes a vassal state in order to get protection from the master. So the master automatically declares war on every nation which is at war with the vassal. I don't see a bug here, a peaceful and voluntary vassalage is NOT a capitulation.

Did you ever think to check your land mass/population/etc. meter? I had a game where I became too powerful, so my vassal left.

This isn't a cunning, intelligent AI. It is one just triggered by behavior/relations/power. He went for you because he was the weakest civilization and was friendly towards you. After you battled with Khan, you become weaker, thus triggering him to end the relationship because you weren't strong enough.

I dont see any vassal trades as sneaky or clever, just inconvient.
