Playing a small map with 11 players on emperor, no settlers and many other options enabled.

I have several barb cities near me and a few opponants.

Jonas, who I did not know nor could I see any border of, some how made Falamer his vassel on turn 43 and to make it worse, Falamer took control of onw of the barb cities right next to me. The city I was barb rushing.

Khazard did perish on turn 25 or so, which made the space.

I guess i just want to understand how that works and how can I do the same in the future?

well I could... but nah... I dont want to. :P

I thought it required the tech Feudalism for vassal states. Must of been lucky village popping or a bug.

Feudalism is needed for vassals, excluding colonies.

I suspect that not allowing settlers may have given them an advantage. Rantine could have taken several barb cities, thus raising the Clan's score high enough to make other civs want their protection. Their Warrens could also have given them a military boost, also increasing their score and making other civs more likely to acquiesce.

I do wonder how this could happen so quickly though. Was this game starting in a latter age and/or with advanced start?
