Video Card Question

It depends on your budget. If money is no object then the GF7800 GTX (or even 2 of them in SLI) is the best available card. However, if like most of us you need to limit your spending, the GF6600 GT offers excellent performance for the price (~ $150).

I do belive I will go with the GF6600 GT. As the GF 7800 GTX is way out of bounds.

The other day I ordered the ATI X700 Pro from NewEgg. I have yet to get it, but I think the GF6600GT and it are pretty similar in performance.

Just remember to plug it into the power supply as well as the motherboard ;)

oh no! from what i'm hearing, something like a radeon x300se might not really be good for civ4? will a video card of that level (the $50 price range) result in the game looking too choppy to the point of annoyance or what? i don't need things to be perfect and civ 4 will be the *only* video game i'll be playing . . . i would feel bad having to spend more than $100 on a card just so i can go out and buy a videogame for an additional $50 or whatever . . .

anyway, so as i'm building a computer on a budget, do you all think i should still bite the bullet and shell out $150 for a card? what about in the $100 range?

:( if i have to spend so much, i'll really have to question if playing civ 4 will be worth $200 . . . sorry if i'm over-reacting. i just wasn't planning on budgeting in so much for a video card. but it'd be sad to have a new computer that couldn't play civ4 sufficiently.

I think only the AGP version requires you to plug it it the power supply. ;)

@m15a, if all you are going to need the card for is civ4, then a X300se should be fine. Just don't expect to be able to play at the highest resolutions with maximum detail.

The reason I suggested a more expensive card to MarineCorps is because he said he wants to play Unreal 2004. First Person Shooters tend to require more graphics power than other genres.
