Hello everyone,

I thought with the new expansion out it might be a good starting point to stream my gameplay.

I comment a lot on what I do. The goal is to help people out a bit, who struggle at the higher difficulty ratings. Maybe I can show you a trick or idea you havn't thought about, yet. And hopefully I can learn some new stuff myself as we go through. Throw me questions live on stream or here.

Mods used:
  • Production Queue,
  • Better Trade Screen
  • Unit Report Screen

The first session actually cuts off after 2 hours 11 min. That was not intended (don't put hotkeys of your streaming program on your numpad, if you use the numpad in the game...), but there is actually not much missing and I will update you on the next stream what happened in the few turns afterwards. There is also some bug with the overlaying diplomatic screen... I get that fixed for the second stream as well.

First session, the Ancient Era:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/228507792 [slightly bugged towards the end]

Topics touched in that episode:
  • First Settlement
  • Keeping Barbarians away from your city
  • Importance of vision
  • Managing Eurekas and Inspirations
  • Why taking loans
  • Being faithful or not

Spoiler What happens in the stream :

  • We make the odd(?) decision to *not* settle on the coast at our settler-spawn, but move away from the coast.
  • We get rid of two barbarian camps
  • Our scouting uncovers Tomyris, two city states, and a natural wonder. Besides that we turn out to be alone on a big chunk of land
  • Tomyris starts aggression versus one of the city states. We observe...
  • We settle two more cities in the ancient era and deepen our relationship with our only neighbour.
  • We enter the Classical Era in a normal age.

Second stream is out!

We move into the Classical era:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/228829786
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/228829786
Topics touched:
  • Dedications
  • Why taking loans (for real this time)
  • Blockades
  • Governors
  • Loyalty
This was a tough play. Things went a bit bad, there had been quite a fwe misplays by me and I was a bit aimless in the overall strategy, torn apart between open aggresion, influencing the opponent's loyalty and aggresive settlement. I think that could have been played much better from my side, but it's not in any case.

Spoiler What happens in the steam :

  • We chose a dedication
  • Our relationship with Tomyris actually prevents us from snatching a settler away from here.
  • Due to that she manages a quite aggresive settlement at out backdoor
  • We settle close to her in turn
  • Some struggling over the only city-state left on our continent -- a quite important one as well
  • We are half-way through the Classical Era and some kind of confrontation with Tomyris is becoming inevitable

Third stream is out!

We move into the Medieval era:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/228985518
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/228985518
Topics touched:
  • Importance of long-time goals ;)
  • Governors promotions
  • Planning your golden ages
After the last rather poor session, I spent some thought about what is actually the long-term goal. Warmongering? If yes, when? As a result of this internal discusion we have a plan to follow in this session and things run much smoother again.
Spoiler What happens in the stream :

  • I discuss our long-term goals.
  • We go on a settling-spree and use all our tools available to push out these settlers
  • We settle two more cities with the third on the way
  • We encounter how loyalty-pressue prevents us from settling spaces, which we would have settled before R&F

Stream number four!

Still in the Medieval era:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/229745820
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/229745820
Topics touched:
  • Trying to figure out Loyalty pressure
  • Failing at figuring out Loyalty pressure
  • Moving Governors for quick city development
Things are heating up in this session. Not only do we double-up on our settlement endeavours but also our diplomatic relationship with Thomyris takes a dent.
Spoiler What happens in the stream :

  • Thomyris starts being aggresive on our beloved city-state
  • That cannot go unpunished. After blocking her units as best as we can for a few turns...
  • ... our friendship runs out and that means we have a sweet protectorate war option
  • The war, although fought mainly defensively, actually leads to a city swap
  • The end the war asap, as it turns out our navy -- ironically -- is not up to the task and we risk losing more than we could win
  • Still we should have gotten the better end of it, as the city we lose will probably flip back to us, by Loyality.

And we are on a run. Stream number five and six:

From Medieval to Renaissance:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/229789847
Renaissance:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/229837828
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/229789847
Topics touched:
  • Dedication bonuses, which to chose.
  • Some military tactics
  • Navy versus Army and estimating AIs true military strength
As you can already see on the topics touched things have moved from friendship to war (it wasn't my fault!).
Spoiler What happens in the stream :

  • First we are underwhelmed by the loyalty pressure we manage to put out on our ex-city
  • But things settle down quickly (pun intended), as we built up our navy and use the traded city for a liberation war.
  • With our own navy at hand we have no trouble of reconquering our own city and two more from Thomyris.
  • We enter a Golden Age in the Renaissance Era and due to that even can flip Carthage from Thomyris and liberate that city state to its old glory

Stream number seven and eight incoming:
Renaissance:https://www.twitch.tv/videos/230009824
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/230009824
End of Renaissance:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/230060398
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/230060398
Topics touched:
  • Naval combat
  • Counting and planning your points towards golden ages
  • Dragging AI into wars
  • Using Loyalty+Liberations to reduce Warmonger Penalties (it's hilarious)
Our war with Thomyris comes to an end and we set eyes on a new target. We also stumble on a juicy exploit on how to reduce your warmonger penalties.
Spoiler What happens in the stream :

  • We crush Thomyris. A short alliance between her and Shaka didn't bring her the relief she wished for.
  • We settle the asian peninsula with a whooping 4 new cities.
  • We begin a strategic war with Pericles as he can't keep his hands from our favorite city state.
  • It turns out he has neglected his army a lot.
