The 'What's New' functionality isn't super useful if you're not interested in several games in the franchise.

Is it possible to enable filtering by forum, in particular by game? I'd love to know what's being discussed in obscure sub-mods of Civ 4, in order to discover new parts of a game I love, but I can't because I have to wade through posts on other games that I'm never going to click on.

It seems that there is indeed no filter there, that is a bit disappointing .
The forums which you don't want to see you could mark as "read" in the general overview, then this would discard them from this overview.
Yeah, not the best solution, I admit.

The only other imperfect solution for avoiding specific threads is to put the OP of that thread on ignore.* This means the threads they start will not show up on the main page for that forum.

However, you would also need to tick the box so you're NOT watching the forum, and you will be tagged if someone there quotes any post you made or references you in a tag.

And of course if you put the OP on ignore, that means you won't be able to read anything else they've written if when you might want to.

And final 'of course' - this won't work if the OP is a staff member.

*@The_J, please realize that I am discussing a technical point about how the forum works, not mentioning specifics of who is and isn't on ignore. This should not be against the rules in this case.

What do you mean by collapsed, Vaka? If I make them not show on the home page, I still see them in the what's new. As to your second post, this isn't about specific threads, if it was 1-5 I could just ignore, it's about whole forums. It's not practical for me to try and ignore threads at scale.

Marking the forum as read is one way around it, but takes a lot of clicks annoyingly.

Which forums don't you want to see?

Here's an example for me: I only play Civ II, so I have the rest of the Civ forums collapsed. I never get email notifications from them, and of Civ II, only if there's a specific thread I'm watching or have replied to. It's easy to ignore the "latest posts" because I honestly don't notice them. I had to shrink the image on my screen a couple of times to fit this all in and that stuff on the right hand side is usually below everything for me (I'm vision-impaired so things are usually magnified for me).

If you mean you access this site via the Home Page, there's an easier way if it's just the forums you want. You can access by the main Forums page, and it's there that you can collapse everything you're not interested in.

This is what I mean. I've taken a screenshot of what the main forum index looks like to me (well, part of it; it's very large):

First off, I'm using the Dark Theme, so it might not look like the theme you're using. You can see that I can't see anything in the Civ III-VI forums because I've collapsed them (check the oval icons on the right and you can see that I've only enabled the ones for Site Feedback and Civilization II). I can see the Civ II forums, because my favorite Civ game is Test of Time.

There are other areas of this index you can collapse as well. I keep Site Feedback visible, and then nothing else until I get down to the Colosseum, where the Off-Topic, History, Arts & Entertainment, Science, etc. and Archives are. I keep those visible. The rest are collapsed, which saves an immense amount of time in navigating and deciding what I want to read and where I want to post. And note that even though the latest posts that come up for me might be in a subforum I can't see, I can just ignore that.

OP was referring to the 'New Posts' section.

As an experiment I collapsed the 'Colosseum' forum but I still the Ukraine and TIL threads from 'Off-Topic'

Ah, okay. In that case, the only way to not see specific threads is to put the OP on ignore so their threads will disappear from the index, unwatch the thread, and hope to not get tagged (and if you do, don't follow the link or you'll never get rid of it).

If the OP is one of the staff, you're stuck, since you can't put staff on ignore (note to mods: this is NOT PDMA, just explaining how XenForo works for situations like this).

The downside is that if you put the OP on ignore for one thread, you also won't be able to see any other threads they start, that you might really be interested in, and it might make the discussion look a bit odd at times, as though people are arguing with themselves if you can't see the posts they're responding to.

This is the only way I know of to not see specific threads, and I don't access the forum through "New Posts." I just go to the subforum index, see which threads are new, and decide if I want to read/reply.
