I may have a new one here. I got a new computer with Vista (32-bit version) and installed Civ IV. Worked great without a hitch. Then the automatic updates updated Vista to SP1. Now it won't go beyond the initial splash screen ("loading...").

Here's the problem report:

Please note: after 6 years on this forum, this is my first cry for help! (Thank you, Vista...)

Update: I tried the DirectX update, but it wouldn't install and said it "wasn't necessary as a newer version is already installed". I tried putting the missing dll files into /system32/directx/ but that didn't help either.

DXDIAG.TXT is attached.

I don't know how a "Deamon" or an emulator would end up on a brand new computer. Also, Civ 4 and BTS worked fine on Vista, but failed to work as soon as the SP1 patch was applied.

It's obviously not a case of DVD drivers being out of date, because they're brand new and the newest available.

Have you done a complete uninstall, reboot, reinstall? I'd try that.
I've never had that issue myself but if you google your error, it's repeated in a range of titles and all fault the games' safedisc copy protection. Why'd it'd suddenly appear after SP1 I can't say. Some "false" emulator denials have been blamed on CD or DVD burning software too, like Nero and others, but that seems very rare.
I hope this helps. Please let us know if/how you resolve it.

Naturally, I uninstalled and reinstalled several times before posting here.

The Civ4 and BTS disks were purchased shortly after first release. They work fine in my laptop running XP.

So to add to this post.

I have the same error as the OP. However when I run it with XP compatibility I don't get an error I get the "CD-ROM not found please insert CD-ROM into drive", that securesafe or saferom( or whatever the name of that BS copyright software) error(Matter of fact if I run it with any kind of compatibility I get the insert CD-ROM error). Anyways, I thought I would add my info.

Firmware is updated for my DVD drive.
All my drivers are up to date.
Running it in Admin mode all the time.

CD worked with my Old xp comp so I know its not a dud.

I have Vista Business 64.

If anyone has a fix that would help I would love to see it!

(update):

Oh yea, I don't have daemon tools or any kind of virtual drive software nor have at any time I since I reformatted.
I also don't have nero or any other buring software on that computer.

The DVD drive is less then a year old (less then a year since I bought it) and is made by Asus its a SATA drive modle DVD-E616A3T.

(Updated update):

I'm not sure what the module is (~df394b.tmp) but it seems to come up alot.

Yea I installed by running as admin, error still there. Even installed the patch with run as admin.

BTS version 3.17

Something that I have noticed is that the application version that is listed in my error is 3.1.3.1 but I installed the 3.17 patch, again this is for BTS. Other then that and some of the additional info its the same its the exact same error.

My Error:

the 3.1.3.1 is the correct version number of 3.17.
Your crash report references the cd not found safedisk error.
could you post your dxdiag results? you can attach files to a post by clicking on go advanced and then on manage attachments :)

I have fixed the problem using a method that can't be discussed here. Sad that I have to go that route.

Thanks for your concern Ori, it's nice to know people want to help!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Civ4 & BTS have been gathering dust ever since I bought them (well, actually I did have Civ4 working on a previous XP box).

Cheers!

I know how frustrated I was and how nice it is to play civ again so I will share with you my solution.

Use a No-CD fix.

Hi there,
thanks for your help. I did hear about the No-CD fix. It really is disgraceful how poor the W2K support is online. In the end, I reinstalled the program - which is irrelevant - & then downloaded & installed the v1.61 Patch which I couldn't download from the W2K site.
I googled it & downloaded it from somewhere else.
This done, I then happily installed BTS, & wasted half the afternoon playing away!!!!

Good luck!!!
