visual guide to city placement and terrain

Hi Brokguitar! I just happened to add that info to my terrain guide earlier today. It's nice to have a visual aid to show people I'm not crazy though. ;)

Placed a link for Stuporstars guide. Its a more printable and detailed version. This is in no way trying to take from this guide but allow a more visual aspect. Great work Stuporstar!

11.06.05 reworked guide to be more fluent and to lead up to city placements. Added resource improvement types and technology needed including science points and worker times chart. If any info is found wrong please post so i can update it. All times were found by my testing and are subject to error.

Great Work :) Must have been disappointing as you realized you did all this just to discover that cities have to be build on Hillls/Plains :)

This is great work! I was going to do some visual aids myself to augment my guide eventually, but less work for me is good thing. I want to start playing.

The SS seems to indicate that there is no use to building workshop by chopping down forest!

That makes sense but something i hadnt realized before. Workshop seems to be the least use ful improvement and its only use seems to be in a stituation where one is desparate for hammers and there arnt any hills or forest around.

EDIT: never mind
His original question was.... "Can you post the differences of FPW when settling on a resource?" I can answer this question for you if you would like to know through testing but, it is very unwise to settle on a resource. The reason for this, you lose the value of that resource you gain after improving it with a worker.

Thats right!! Why build a workshop in a tundra (which can only be built by a river) if you can build a watermill and keep the food bonus?

Workshop comes earlier, if you are hurting for production, or some places that's your only option (tundra not near city).

Also, later techs give improvements, and a Civic does give +1 food for workshops. Limited use though.

Good stuff. A mention of what techs are in place with each of the improvements would be nice, though. And maybe even the Civics being used, as those change the value of various mills/workshops/towns, etc.

I know settling on a resource is generally bad, but are there exceptions, like the hill/plains thing? Do you get ANY of the bonuses (other than connectivity) when you settle on any resource? Does your tech level matter?

It'd be nice to know what terrain tiles have which resources, if you could? As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any limitations.

There isn't any limitations in the World Builder, but the game seems to only generate certain combinations.

It's in the civiliopedia and the manual too, I think. I was wondering if you retain the defensive bonus of a hill when you build a city on a hill.

Yes, you do and beside having your city placed "behind" a river (of course only when the enemy has to cross it), this is the only way to get a terrain bonus for your city.It is extremly useful, since you can use the Guerilla promotions then as an additional line of city defense promotions.

I have tested out this question by starting new maps and zooming out to world view. YES! there are limitations to resources. Granted i say plains and grasslands...this doesnt include a jungle or forest being on that tile also. I am telling you what type of tile it will be on.
1)Incense will always be on the desert.
2)Bananas,Dyes,Rice,Spices,and Sugar will always be on grasslands.
3)Wine and Wheat is always in plains.
4)Fur and Deer always tundra or snow.
5)Ivory,Corn,Cows,Pig,Sheep,and Silks always on grasslands or plains.
