Balderstrom,

Wait what? I thoght Marathon build times for buildings increased proportionantly with the speed change and that just the military units that did not.

This is true, and he is correct that it drastically affects game balance.

Ive always played on normal speed, but have recently realised that you dont get to use your units as much before you have researched a more upto date version. So am going to go home and try an epic to see if that is better.

Marathon, all the time. The others are just too quick. I like games to last days.

Epic. I don't really think of it taking longer to research, rather, I think of my units getting extra movement.

Marathon. The longer the better! I just finished a multiplayer game at that speed with a friend: took a day and three full nights, if I remember correctly.

I am exaggerating a bit but I'm shocked most here dont use normal. What is normal about it if most dont use it.. or are you guys weirdos?

This arouses deeper ethical questions. Are Firaxis trying to make Civ appeal to the masses - who arent Civ players - by making the normal pace of the game fast(er)? Do we have a poor cross-section of civ players on a Civ fansite?
Normal isn't faster than it was in the previous Civilization games (I think). Quick was the attempt to make the game faster, but as you can see on the poll results, it hasn't been a particularly popular option. :p

Ive played normal without thinking about it but my brother apparently likes epic. Does this mean I'm a better person than him? (rhetorical/obv yes)
No. :D

Normal but I might try epic soon.

No, normal was 540 turns in civ3.

My mistake, but I do remember Civ2 games went by in a flash, more or less. Perhaps it was faster than Civ3 and same as Civ4's Normal speed?

Marathon. It seems easier to build a tech lead and move units under that setting. Of course my family sometimes misses me during a week of just one game. :p

I played alot of Epic speed prior to the 3.17 patch, but I prefer tectonics maps on Marathon speed. The map and the opportunities for strategy and combat work well together. Civ 4 is much more quickly paced than some of the other games in the series, and i don't prefer it that way. I like the ebb and flow that Marathon games allow for, and not the feeling of "racing" through the tech tree.

0 for quick eh? It makes sense - quick is garbage. They really should balance it so that units don't obsolete en-route and armies aren't produced while a SoD is marching a matter of a few tiles.

Quick really encourages naval transport fleets, but in my normal games though, usually i dont bother. can imagine that saving 2 turns per city would be a huge boost in a quick match

I feel so crappy for being the only player who plays on quick.

I'll try normal or epic my next game I guess.

Or be able to upgrade a unit no matter where it is, so long as it's at full health, would certainly negate the major problem of obsolesence and the number of centuries it takes units to move.

It could just cost more ~ +15-25% in Neutral/Friendly Territory; +30-50% in Enemy Territory; +10-15% in your own Land. and +0% in one of your Cities.

If you're winning, I'd feel good regardless of the setting.

So what works, strategywise, for the faster settings?

Jeez, rather than feeling crappy, can you perhaps guide me as to how it's possible to war on quick? Or do you play more peacefully, where it makes more sense ;)?

There's definitely nothing wrong with playing it if you like it. I just don't because it doesn't feel balanced. The fact that the AI can occasionally produce multiple units while I'm en route to their city (seriously, with big culture + emperor they generate 3 units with just hammers - I can't even imagine what it would look like on deity) really throws me off.

I'd imagine the power it grants to teching rapidly means that warring is less effective (and barbs less meaningful). I'd imagine if you're skillful in say culture it's actually EASIER, but that's not really to my tastes .

I'm a dedicated Marathon Man, but I'll have to play a game on Quick one of these days just to see the difference. Of course, by the time I'm done with my current game (in about a month) I'll probably forget...:D

On standard Monarch Maps:Epic.
On large Emperor Maps:Marathon.

I want them to make a slower speed than marathon. One that makes a game take twice as long than on Marathon
