Religions were a very welcome addition to Civ 4 and I think the idea should be developed further in Civ 5.
I think religions should have POWERFUL bonuses and minuses to reflect their powerful role in shaping human history. Wars have been fought over religions and religious fanaticism has been a driving force in many conflicts.
Just a few religious conflicts: Crusades, Christian fanatics stormed the Holy land and faced Islamic counter-fanaticism, a long and bloody conflict ensued which is still remembered in Arabic lands, the name crusader has a negative connotation in those parts even today, whereas in Christian societies a crusade means something pure and righteous, a rightful struggle.
The conquest of the Americas: Spanish Conquistadors stormed the Middle- and South-Americas wiping out native cultures as they went and spreading Christianity by the sword.
I think the role of religion should be ENFORCED. Governments that have a state religion should be "tied" to that religion and to advancing its cause, giving rise to religious wars, wars to spread a religion.
A diplomatic option could be added (like in Paradox´s Europa Universalis series), "demand conversion", a loser in a war could be forcibly converted to the winners choice of religion, conversion by the sword.
Religious fanatics could be powerful unit promotions or units, religions could have unique units and unique unit promotions, like Christian Crusaders and Islamic Jihadists, Hindu Fanatics etc. Every religion has its militant wing.
Ancient religions should be brought to the game, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Phoenician, Nordic, Middle-American etc.
Religious strife should be brought to the play, having multiple religions in a city can cause strife and anger.
Any more ideas how religions could be improved?
Cheers!
