Vox Populi Weekly Civ Challenge I - Khan You Dig It?

Just completed my game. Fulfilled all conditions and streamed for insurance.

Btw, it ended on turn 249. I maybe could've shaved off about 20 turns if I didn't decide to rush the end, but meh...

Just a reminder: This is king difficulty.

If you want to catch the game, here is the link:

Game begins at 46:40.

Edit: I found out that part of the audio is now muted. So apparently I have to mute the game completely next time, seeing as how civ BGM can't be used at all. Sheesh. Part of my commentary is gone too.

Hey, nice job. Nearly two games in one night, eh?

Btw, I don't know why, but I don't have the autosave function for the mod...this might not be the place to ask it, but it's bugging me quite a bit.

Copyright is so frustrating. What do they think people are going to do? Get their classical music from people streaming civ?

You're right, this isn't the right place. Take it here: https://github.com/LoneGazebo/Community-Patch-DLL/issues

I had to start twice and give up due to having a very isolated start (only one other AI close by, almost no city states close by). Third time was a bit better but still spawned on my own on an island with a single CS. Luckily Persia was just across the channel with a decent number of cities, and it was fun taking him down with my skirmishers, and that wasn't a complete cakewalk in complicated terrain. Four nearby CS on another island went down to forcible tribute once my substantial navy surrounded them just before I got my caravels and discovered the rest of the world. Now I just have to decide who to beat up first when I get astronomy. The happiness for every pantheon founded pantheon is very useful for a warmonger as it gives you a steady boost to happiness when you need it most for early wars. I probably wont get time to finish this game before my holiday ends though.

An earlier try was using the border blobs strategy with Arabia near by. I decided to farm him for yield on unit kill rewards while fighting happiness issues for a bit too long, and the war became tedious. Border blobs with all the pieces in place is amazing though and quite fun.

Between having a game to finish and being a lifelong non-fan of Mongols (or domination), I'll pass on this week's challenge, but think the challenges are a great way to test and learn. To that end, it may be worth the trouble of providing a map that has a decent start for everyone. This makes it much, much easier to compare notes re: city placement, diplomacy, and overall strategy.

Not a bad idea. Perhaps for the next one.

Scoreboard time!

Dawnbringer is on the board with a 1690AD Domination Victory.

That gives him: 810 Points!

Who shall topple the bringer of dawn?

Twas an interesting game. My last few games I've struggled against the improved AI, this game I just steamrolled across the entire map. Only one that really put up a fight was Sweden, the other ones just crumbled like cookies.

Mongolia was surprisingly fun to play, those skirmishers did serious work. 6 movement makes their manouverability and survivability insane, at the end I had 6 or 7 of them with logistics/range running about (turns out range is kinda unnecessary with all their movement but oh well). The healing from the Khans was a nice little boost too and their extra movement makes it really easy to position them just right and move them along with the horde. Gers weren't really doing much aside from speeding up Tribute's gold generation, but that's probably my fault for forgetting the border expansion pantheon exists (though All Creation served me very well). If this game had went into ideologies they'd've prolly helped a lot with Lebensraum.

Also, is there any particular reason that puppet cities seem to hate buildings? I puppeted nearly my entire empire but they spent 90% of their time turning production into gold/science/culture. In particular they didn't build lighthouses at all, not even to make city connections, and only a few cities produced any scientific buildings.

All in all quite enjoyable, look forward to next weeks challenge!

So I decided to take on Mongolia as the civ of the week. Like I said in my other civ of the week post, I'm not that big of a fan of the idea of playing for a score, so I just played at my own pace/ where I wanted to end the game. I chose all standard settings and Immortal difficulty. I'd definitely like to hear some feedback on how you liked the album as I plan to post one for every weekly challenge. I wasn't exactly thrilled with this one and would like them to keep getting better.

Cantabrian Circle. I'm going to be using that term from now on. Sick.
How certain was victory, how was the tech lead on the other continent over you?
I enjoy these write ups, don't think you need to go crazy on more screenshots.

I'd say 95% Certain. They were only only 3-4 techs behind. However, I had too many strategic resources to be stopped. My plan if I had continued this game was to send my horses east and take Rome. They were at war with Indonesia, were behind in techs and only had 2 cities (one recently conquered). The other 2 capitals were coastal and I had enough gold to rush buy frigates.

I think the only way I could have lost is if I had failed an attack on Denmark (who was the next most powerful civ) and lost all of my army. Even then I wouldn't have been able to be invaded, but I was behind infrastructure so they may have been able to surpass me in techs while I regrouped.

Scoring
  • Scoring method: Score = 2500 - Game End Year (so if you end in 1900 AD, your score will be 600).
  • Every difficulty level above King grants you an extra 50 points (so Deity = +150 points).

I never finished my game as I noticed I was going to lose to Rean by some 10 turns. However, I wanted to raise a point about the scoring system. At the time you're going to win the game, each turn counts as 10 years. Therefore, changing the difficulty level one step more difficult means you'll have 5 turns more to win the game. This basically means that in order to win the challenge, you're forced to play on king, since each difficulty level after it is going to slow you down by much more than 5 turns. There is little challenge playing on king if you are an immortal level player.

Right, but players should be trusted to play on a difficulty level that's challenging to them. King difficulty is roughly as difficult to a King player as Deity is to a Deity player.

I liked to read it. I however dislike that you felt forced to quit, as you thought your victory was assured. A civ game should be challenging until the very end. Perhaps any other civ in the other continent could achieve any other victory before you reach there. Or if you get there too fast, maybe conquest is too easy right now.

Well I think you get to a point in any civ game where you know you're going to win/lose. For me it's just a time thing, I don't want to play just to get to the victory screen. In this particular game, I had a lot going right for me and I was able to destroy the Iroquois before they pulled too far away tech wise. Their tech advantage helped me get a lead over the other continent. Now if the other continent had been ahead in techs or if another civ was able to pull ahead on that continent the game would have been more interesting until the end.

I don't think conquest is inherently easier than other victory conditions in general. I do think Mongolia is overpowered for human players that have an abundance of horses. But, it's tough to balance around that.

I know this there was a lot of controversy about the weekly challenges and who would be running them. However, I'd like to see another civ of the week if someone could make that happen.
