WangKon (EC)

Shadowed this on the weekend. Was interesting. Managed to get steel from Liberalism and now have rifles and cannons ready to go while no other civ even has chemistry. Pacal is obvious target due to the quality of his cities, the fact that the military tech advantage is going to be available for longer against other civs and he is the main contender for a victory condition. Going for a quick win it might be worth hitting Alex first but this will make taking down Pacal much harder so if that gamble doesn't pay off it could be a long end game (and with all those cities Alex can probably keep us busy for a long time while Pacal is in major trouble as soon as just a couple of cities are gone). Privateers have slowed the AI's down and if I'm honest I don't think it will take long to finish this off. Got some really good luck towards the end of the round and had silver pop up near Paris and copper in the South East the turn after, couldn't believe it (even if it didn't make much of a difference to the actual round).

Looking at a VC from submitted saves, AP/UN looks tempting. If Alex is as backwards with everyone else as on my save it might be worth taking him on but the cultural situation with Pacal is the main threat I see for an AI victory and having his wodners and Holy Cities would be massive.

I would say the militaristic approach is the most interesting. Therefor my votes will be as following.

1) Gumbolt, the military-techs are all in, decent techrate, nice diplo for some good ol backstabbing. 3p

2) Norvin Green. Didn't go the military route but I'd say this is the strongest save. Best tech-rate and overall good teching. Nice diplo aswell. Feels like we could go on in many different directions from here. 2p

3) PnP. Rifling is in and Steel the next turn. Then go smash some heads. A little slow techrate but good diplo. 1p

Rather shattered from a hard slog at work. So far I think Norvin Green is ahead in the vote. Awaiting 3 votes including mine. Give me a few hours to recover and I will make a decision.

Back later. :)

I was away all weekend so I'll try to get a vote in after work today. :)

I think we should wait for your vote as you are ahead so far. Would be unfair on the other saves.

I had a hard time deciding as I stink at the end game and trying to figure out where each save was headed was difficult (for me anyway).

1st place - lymond - looks to be a winnable UN game and is close to being able to start building it. Would face off against Alex so I think you'd win.

2nd - Gumbolt - basically same as above but there is a longer time until UN can be built.

3rd - pnp_dredd - really solid military position but would also take much longer. Solid tech situation. Only 3rd because of the length of time needed to trounce everyone!

CBPE and Glansmannen are hurt by the war situation.

Okay votes so far

NG - 7
Lymond - 6
Gumbolt 5
PNP Dred 4
CBPE 1
Glansmannen 1

I will have a look at the top 2 saves in a bit. Hopefully start next round in 10 mins or so.

Overall I think lets give this round to Norvin Green. I do wonder if we need to adopt a religion. Alex is not yet at pleased and Pascal is free religion anyway. We are losing happiness here with such a warmonger on our door step.

There is probably a minor risk of An AI AP win on Lymond save if JoaII vassels Pascal. I suspect the UN will deal with this. either save would of been interesting to play.

Overall I see a lot of diplomatic wins next round. Not 100% sure how this works as we are not in top 2 scores. I assume the person that builds UN gets the vote. :)

Congratulation to NorvinGreen on winning this round.

Congratulations to Norvin Green who has won this round. Here is the winning save to be used for the next round:

Gumbolt, you posted a 1.100AD save...

Spoiler :

I went for mass media path to have UN in my hands, and with the idea to build Cristo Redentor to switch between civics and religions to be as much more as agreeable with our rivals.

When I was building both, Alex DoW on me.

With an amphibious surprising attack he captured Paegam, and at the same time unloaded a stack outside Pusan, starting bombard it.
So I've rushed-buy the CR (it cost more than 5.000 gold but I could afford) and revolt instantly to Nationhood and Theocracy adopting Buddhist (I tried to bribe Izzy into war without doing. Anyway, now she's friendly with me).

So I drafted and rushed-buy Rifles and I was able to quickly recapture Paegam:

civ4screenshot0005g.jpg

I've also wiped out the stack outside Pusan

civ4screenshot0006d.jpg

And another little stack that he unloaded afterwards.

civ4screenshot0007l.jpg

I made peace gifting him Liberalism, even if I've put down some ironclads and then he couldn't approach to our cities more, but unhappiness (due also to the drafts) was becoming an issue.

civ4screenshot0008n.jpg

So the war didn't hurt me so much, but surely he slowed me a bit.

Now I'm beeling Industrialism 'cause it seems me that we have a great tech leadership but if we don't have Alluminium in our island a space victory could be very difficult.

Anyway, I'm taking care of the diplomacy. I've switched back to bureaucracy (it seems me it's more opportune than FS at the moment) also to hurry up the building of UN in Paris.
After having made some other rush-buy (maybe also UN when possible) I'm thinking about switch to HR which is favourite civic of Pacal and Joao:

I've built NE in Ceheju: it popped a GS that could hurry Fission or wait for a second GP which is coming to trigger a GA.

I'm sorry that I've forgotten that Norvin Green was running all the EPp against Pacal.
Only now I've sent 3 spies in his land, next turn they'll be able to do some disservice.

Looks like this is the last or next-to last round.

I'm working on the next map... leader is Willem, map type: tectonics, 70% water... still testing for balance issues though. It should look quite different than previous maps in the cookbook.

Spoiler :
I did a clicking exercise on this game. I switched civics to JoaII and Pascal fav civics and did same for Izzy. I gave in to JoaII tributes.

I had to gift pascal a tech to make him vote for me. JoaIi voted for me, Spain did too, by time vote came round. Ended with a 1706 diplomatic victory although i lost 2 cities to Alex. A moral victory but I didnt play it properly.

I suspect JoaII would also dow us if we didnt give into his demands.

I think a diplomatic win is possible but by about 1720 and this would include setting taxes to 100% to rush UN.

@ Kossin. Please do get map ready. :)

@Gumbolt
Yea... with some diplo manipulation it shouldn't be too hard! Favorite Civics will carry a long way here.

Spoiler :

I think the key to this round is realising for a diplomatic win JoaII and Pascal need to be treated like kings. had a play with CBPE save. JoaII is a bit annoyed with us so even with favourite civics he abstains. I could of gifted him a tech or tried liberating a city

@ game

Spoiler :
Have you noticed how many privateers are on this map??? Never seen the AI ever build 2-3 or more but here they have loads!!! Wow!! Busy Alex!!!

endgame spoiler -> victory. Read at your own risk.
Spoiler :

Actually it's pretty easy. Fight off Alex then convert to HR/Theology/No State Religion(alternatively FR if you want to bribe Joao to it so you can stay in Buddhism after), bribe Joao and Pacal into HR, build UN and win.

I also looked at CBPE's save and from there it's pretty darned easy to accomplish as well.
