    Wang Kon(EC)!! Let the games begin!!!

    The Emperor Cookbook is a concurrent succession game series to help readers learn how to play and win at Emperor level in Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword, v3.19

    Some of you may be familiar with the previous Monarchist Cookbook games. We decided to raise the level of difficulty to Emperor. Because we are always playing from the best save, this difficulty should be approximately equal to Monarch/Emperor level difficulty.

    Our Emperor Cookbook game features Wang Kon . We will be playing at Emperor difficulty, Epic, with a standard sized map. Huts and events are disabled for this game, as they tend to make things more random.

    Here is the info on our leader, his unique unit and building as well as our starting position and settings:

    Spoiler :

    Our Fearless Leader: Wang kong

    Okay here is the revised save that we are using for the cookbook. Please play from this save!!! (27/01/2010) Thankyou Kossin again for your help on this and putting up with my quirky requests. :)

    ========

    Round one lasts from 4000 BC - 1500 BC.

    Please play this Round and submit your Report into this thread by 29th January 2010 if possible. (This time frame may change once game is up and running! Do post if you need more time!!)

    IMPORTANT : Please use spoilers if you want to discuss opening strategies prior to starting the round.

    At the end of your Round, please remember to name your save with your name, game and Round # & game date (i.e. "EC2 Round 1 MyName BC-1500.CivBeyondSwordSave"). (And please don't forget to attach it to your Round report, either! ) Please also state your usual difficulty of play.

    ========

    Roster:

    YOU! - contributor, voter - our most important fixture, the readers who follow the threads and play along.

    Now that we have upped the difficulty level, we will return to the 'best ball' system of selecting and playing saves. What this essentially means is that after we have completed each round, everyone will have a chance to vote on which save is in the best position. The winning save will be used for the next round.

    If there is any player who is strong at Emperor+ level, it would be great to have you post your saves to show us how it's done. However, I request that any of you who realize your round was far superior remove your save from the voting. This rule is intended to ensure that the game doesn't get into a overly strong winning position after only a few rounds (because what fun is that? ).

    Voting Rules:

    1. You may NOT vote on your own save (but you are encouraged to state the strengths and weaknesses of your save).
    2. For your vote to count as winning save you are expected to have voted for 3 other saves where possible. There is an element of fair play expected from those that vote and tactical voting is to be discouraged.
    3. Only those who have posted a round may vote (those who are shadowing are always encouraged to express their opinion!)
    4. Don't vote on a save that has voluntarily been removed from the running by the person who submitted it.
    5. At the end of each round you can vote on 3 saves for first, second and third place. I believe that these votes should be made publicly in order to allow for as much discussion as possible. I strongly encourage you to explain why you are voting for a particular save. This is one of the best ways to learn, and that's what this game is all about! If you feel uncomfortable voting publicly, PM me with your vote.

    After a couple days for voting and discussion a winner will be declared and we will move on to the next round using the winners save.

    =======

    A special shout out goes to Kossin who provided us with the map!

    =======

    And with that, let the Game begin...

    ========

    Intrathread links (ToC): (note, the turn sets are subject to change, this is a tentative schedule to get this first round underway, we are still trying to find the best length for each round)

    Base map setting is 'Continent' in case anyone wants to know.

    Good luck to everyone!

    EDIT: I took the liberty of adding the save in the meantime since Gumbolt seems to have forgotten it :p

    Edit2: If you want a challenge, this save is a HARD version of the map that was created... probably by mistake.

    The correct save to use is here. Apologies to anyone that got frustrated by this map.

    The updated BFC is in the spoiler below

    Lol so busy setting up the details i forgot the save lol

    I will probably skip the first round as I play tested start a bit but I have no other map knowledge than the 1500bc save will provide. I could do a round as a shadow? I will certainly join in second round.

    Not so hot start location. Tempting to go settle on the banana for lots of green hills.

    I dont think this map will be as easy as last cookbook. Lets see how we do.

    You are welcome to shadow Shyuhe. Be great to see a deity player like you take this challenge on. Financial and the UB should make this an interesting game.

    Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums and only a monarch player but I thought I'd give this game a chance.

    1500 BC

    Spoiler :

    Looks like it's going to be a pretty tough game, no copper or horses in the area and a creative leader right next door.

    My game plan was to block off louis from the rest of the land. Got 2 cities up and another settler is on his way to the position where my warrior is in the south. I went Ag>AH>BW>wheel>writing>working on IW. Decided on writing because my research isn't doing all so hot and my plan was to get some libraries and scientists working. IW is needed hopefully for iron but atleast to clear all the jungle on this map. Military is very poor right now, only a few warriors, been having some pretty close fights with barbs and I hope theres iron in the area . Archery would have been a good idea probably but I would have to have gotten hunting first.

    Empire as of 1500 BC

    Close up of northern area

    I don't see how you can make it worse than having Monty + GK + Toku as your neighbors like the last EC. I'm guessing MM + Darius + Gandhi or some combination like that on the other continent with gold mines :lol:

    Spoiler :
    Actually, this is the second version of the map. Gumbolt said it was too easy to choke Louis and that there were too many resources available on the landmass. So by request, I altered things and added that riverside copper (it was in his 3rd city originally).

    In case someone still wanted to choke Louis until Construction to kill him, well whatever works... there are other AIs out there.

    I figured the map was altered (it tells in the settings), and since there was no other civ and since i know it's continents, i snapped his 1st worker (always work steal on slow speeds usually if i can) and when i found he had copper, me not... hunting->archery
    The land is very good, so I don't see how can lose that, no plan to finish from here, though.

    Under normal condition, it's a very difficult map.

    Popping gold in Capital would certainly help with that. I hope it's not too cruel to be honest though - that's certainly not the point of the cookbook.

    Spoiler :

    map observation, warnings.
    Spoiler :

    Can't build useful boats at all amongst the other problems (only galleons, slows down even further w/o caravels and trading). If later, some privateers appear it's really unpleasant.

    Before gunpowder, one can only defend. On a second guess longbow/siege should work, though... and it'll a funny thing to observe. Also if you get unlucky and a barb city spawns (i got one near the wheat but w/ copper, that's not an issue), it's there to stay and annoy you. Anyone not fogbusting properly and especially deciding to skip archery signs a death contract after a few axes pop up which may decided to go on a pillage missions (really hate pillaging axes) even if you have archers.

    happy resources are not plenty (the ones can be potentially obtained) and there is so much jungle to chop w/o any commerce resource. Settling on the banana is the right move which makes food poor capital that has to cottaged most likely. Although windmills here are great... but late.

    I can try to see if it's just pain to play w/o choke/rushing.

    aargh!

    Spoiler :

    I'm getting tired of the lack of resources. Not just this game but it seems to happen a lot to me lately. Cap should eventually have decent production but pretty lame on food and resources - no strategic resources in sight. Teching is slow - try to get cottages going up north. Hopefully, Ironworking will show something. This round went really fast without feeling I had accomplished much. Went for Stonehenge to hopefully counteract Mister Creative to the East, but stilted my settler production. I have a settler on the way east to settle dyes/rice for a little blockage - no IW yet though so it will be rough for a bit. I guess I probably should have gone for Archery and harassed Louie a bit but I usually don't do that with Archers much and at the time figured BW or AH would show something. Louie has the resource to take out that Barb city long before me.

    Points taken. There is a horse resource available post-Mathematics or post-sailing depending where you settle. In my test games, Louis always managed to found a religion (usually Confu). so I got him to Friendly relatively easily and then trading was doable until I took him out with Cavalry.

    Initial land was much more richer (more gems, and several calendar resources) but I was asked to make it more bare...

    That there is no good coastal production city is kind of wanted to discourage GLH which is another request. Until workshops+Moai I guess...

    I'm not sure why but for some reasons the barb units are especially metallic on this map (lots of spears/axes/swords) and the only tech they have is Archery... what triggers this?

    There are always catapults for barb cities but they can be annoying yes.

    We had a vc by 1280 and 1260bc!!! The game was pretty much over for me by 900ad. It was a case of going through the motions really of completing the game. I do accept Ambrose save made the game much easier. His warmongering was V impressive. Monty and Toku capitals were huge once captured. Monty capital was a GP farm in all the games i looked at.

    Even so with the start all the forest rushing a close Ai wasnt too hard. The fast workers made chopping much quicker.

    @ kossin. I dont want too hard maps. I just dont want a game where by 1100ad the game is almost over or considered won. We do play from the best save each round so some tinkering is always needed to even up the game for the AI. Perhaps we could consider giving them immortal techs to balance the best save approach and play unaltered maps?
