Want an easy way to play Civ V online? Say hello to Giant Multiplayer Robot! (GMR)

I'm not sure what happened there but the save file for deadlyfred was definitely messed up. I reverted back to BingBang's turn and test played his turn to verify that it worked. So he should be able to replay his turn (which with respect to GMR games seems to be a pretty big one!) and then we'll see how it goes from there.

Please let me know if anything else gets messed up. And if BingBang can let me know when he's submitted his turn I can go back and play test it for deadlyfred to see if it works.

Will do thanks for your help.

Thanks Kiffe! The save file is definitely messed up, and in strange ways that I haven't seen before. Is this the same game that you had emailed me the save file for a week ago? If not could you email me the save file you used to create this?

Thanks! :)

Here is the Save file ! A big thaks to you and GMR. I will push for french community to reward you at the fair price. Thanks.

Alright I've replaced the save file out on the GMR website with a modified version of the one you gave me. It doesn't have the names of the other players loaded into it yet, but it should get that after you take your turn and submit it to the website. Try it out and let me know how it works. Also thank you for your tremendous support! :)

I just played my turn and every thing looks okay thanks for the help.

Hi Mel I wanted to report bug I have run into on the GMR page.

Today I had 3 notifications indicated by the red numeral in the upper right of the page. Each notification was less than an hour old. When I clicked on it, it showed me that I had a turn to make, that someone had commented on one of my games and that someone had invited me to a game. I clicked on the the second to read the comment and it took me to the page.

Bug: The numeral went to 0 and the other messages disappeared. The newest displayed message was a grayed message from 14 hours ago.

I have email notifications turned off.

Thanks Mel. It does work, but I am really sorry, I give you the file with DLC. Would it be possible to do it with this one as some of the player doesnot have any DLC ? Sorry for that.

Kiffe.

Any luck with those logs? Today I had one particularly stubborn save that wouldn't load. I restarted the app about three times but still no luck. Restarted steam, no luck. Restarted my computer, then finally it worked. The game was Sail the Seven Seas!

When it loads up, it takes about 15 seconds or so to launch civ. When it fails, it takes literally around two minutes or more before it goes to the error message. It's a drag, as this issue can sometimes double or more the amount of time it takes me to get through my turns.

I've noticed this aswell. Its like it doesnt sort your messages with the newest one on top anymore once you checked once. I think we all feel the same way when I say we want it back.
Only way to make it work is to click so you get to the page with all your messages, then you can click previous page once you've read all the messages in one game.

Yes, I have come up with a few ideas to help your situation, although I haven't had a chance yet to implement them as their a little more on the complicated side.

The best I've determined from the log file you sent and the experience you're describing is that the connection between the GMR client and server is timing out while attempting to download a save file. All web connections have a time-limit for how long they can stay alive and for some reason you're hitting that time limit when attempting to download some of these saves. This could be due to several things, one is that you may have a "slow" connection to the GMR server due to your internet speed and geographical location (try doing a speed test to a server in Calgary, AB (Canada) and see what your download speed is). Another reason might be that the GMR app is trying to perform too many simultaneous calls to the GMR server (refreshing your list of games, pre-downloading games, getting the Steam status of players, etc...) and this is blocking or stalling the save download. If you notice the save file size for "Sail the Seven Seas!" is about 1.2MB, which is about twice the average file size on GMR (~500KB), so it makes sense that if a download were to timeout it would happen on this larger file.

A couple changes I'm going to try implementing to is to change the way the client gets save files from the server (right now it gets the whole file in one request, I'm going to change it to stream the file down), and I'm going to see if I can increase the time-limits for the connections between client and server. Those two things might help resolve this for you and anyone else experiencing similar issues. :)

Hi Mel, thanks for the feedback.

Okay I used that app to run two tests, one to a local server in Auckland. Interestingly, the app would not load any servers beyond about 9,000 kilometres. So the second test I ran was to...somewhere in China, I think. So the distance may be a big factor. Here are the results.

1) DL 7.5 MBps, UL 0.81 MBps, ping 34 ms
2) DL 7.66 MBps, UL 0.71 MBps, ping 406 ms

I was thinking maybe I shouldn't start DLing a save file right after launching the app, but rather wait a while after it's loaded up, before launching a turn, if it's still busy doing other things?

Edit this was done via iPad, so all wireless, dunno if that makes a difference vs my desktop where I run civ.

Edit 2: the other game in that session that loaded up right away was Kyp's Game, which I would've thought would be a comparable or bigger file size?

No DLC civs indeed, but wonders pack...
Sorry for that again.

Hey Kiffe, It turns out the save file you sent me (Partie histo bien.Civ5Save) has the same strange corruption and won't load in CiV. Could you create the game again using your scenario, save it during the first turn and then send me that save file? Thanks :)

Good work Onan, those speeds do seem to suggest that you might have high latency to the GMR server over here in NA. Even though, ~7.6 MBps should be enough for what GMR does. I think your idea to let the GMR client just sit for a minute before trying to launch a game is a good idea. There is a bit more communication it does when it first starts than the rest of the time it's running.

I also just released an update to the GMR client that changes it to stream save files to and from the server. You may not notice a difference or this could have a big effect, it's difficult for me to predict as it depends on your system, network, and internet connection. But it shouldn't hurt anything :)
