Warhammer fantasy units/graphics preview/development thread

Looks great. He'll fire the crossbow in melee combat, but I don't think that can be avoided.

That's not a problem (I think), since all units with ranged attack animation - when attacking or are being attacked by - a melee unit, fight in melee distance. And the firing of the crossbow would also act as a first-strike animation (i.e. defensive bombard). :)

I like it. :) The X-bow is a nice addition to the ranger unit. Any chance you're considering making a Dwarf miner unit, like the current WH model with the candle on his helmet, with a tunnelling type or paradrop animation? Either way, the Dwarf Ranger looks great, and will take care of those requests for a dwarf x-bowman that you have avoided in the past. :)

Hmmmm... certainly would be a cool idea. Would it be purely an attack-unit, or would it be also used as an engineer (I think that wouldn't be necessary though...)

Aalgo.. any possibility you could make a mortar version of the Kannon- the Lobba? It would make me happy.

I hadn't intended on using it as an engineer. I had thought of it mostly as an attack unit with the paradrop ability, and maybe making it a transport to represent Dwarven miners leading troops through their tunnels. So, yeah, if you made a modern-model miner with paradrop, I don't think giving it worker-anims would be necessary.

Maybe give the engineer a build road gfx? This way it can be flagged attack (or defense or whatever is appropriate) and build roads too. This way they should be unwheeled though. Ah, I don't know... complications...:undecide:

Ranger looks good, btw. :)

Since one of the game modes is a 'capture the flag', should the warhammer mod have the flag to be something like this (don't worry, the banner image is just a test, imitating the looks of the civ3-army banners)?

I think it looks good.

Having never played a capture-the-flag game, I don't know whether the appearance of the flag makes much of a difference. Setting that aside, though, I think the banner looks good. Though, can there be different flag types for different nations? For example, while that banner works well for greenskins, dark elves, chaos and 'evil' humans, the 'good' nations like the Elves, Bretonia, and the Empire seem to use steaming, triangular banners. And Lizardmen use totems. So, different banners be used in the same game to represent the different types of banners these different groups have? Not that making diverse flag units like that is important, I'm just curious.

I think, that in the capture-flag mode, you can have only one type of 'flag-unit' (not race specific, but I could be wrong here). That flag unit appears in every city you conquer (IIRC - it's been so long time since I played that mode, so I may be wrong here). The flag is immobile, and you have to grab it with one of your military units, and bring it to one of your own cities (possibly to your capital).

I also thought that these kinds of banners could be useful in some scenarios.
Maybe if I did a banner for each culture group: Humans, Chaos, Dwarfs, Elfs and ...?

Wow that Dwarf is really cool.

How about a dwarf archer though? I know dwarfs don't use bows in WH, but neither does the Dark Elves, and ED gave them an archer unit in the mod. It would also make more sense, as the dwarfs would have to develop bows before crossbows.

I agree. Besides, there's a couple of other mods that could use it. ;)

This would also help aleviate the "clueless dwarf without iron"-syndrome.

But... but... dwarfs are supposed to be clueless without iron. :)
Next you would ask for a halfling bowman I suppose. Well, I'll see what I can do about that dwaven archer. . .

The Miner looks great. :) I definatly like the beard. The only suggestion I would have is to make the candle larger. I know that making it larger will make it look a bit unusual and cartoonish... but that how Dwarves are in Warhammer. So, yeah, I'd suggest increasing the candle to at least double it's current size. Aside from that, it looks perfect. Thanks for making this, aaglo.
