Hey, thought I'd try out a story thread and see how I rate against forums people's standards.:p

Anyways, I did a Custom Game (would normally have been a Play Now game, but I can't get the barbs to leave me alone long enough. I've never had that problem before; but that's not the point.

Leader: Brennus
Traits: Spiritual and Charismatic
Map Type: Shuffle
Climate: Random
Sea Level: Random
Difficuly: Noble
Speed: Marathon
7 Civs
No Barbarians
Permanent Alliances Enabled

On to the story...

---
I think I had a pretty good start. Right by a river AND the ocean to boot. Hardly ever have access to the sea.

That goodie hut gives me another scout, and I automate both.

The spot I picked is right next to a hill, but it had two breads and a coin, so I figured that I'd take that one, rather than on the opposite bank in the forest, which was two breads and a hammer. I hardly ever MAKE money in the game, so I am always weasling it out of friends.

I pick my first tech to be fishing, due to the fact that I have clams right off the bat.
Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

I meet Tokugawa of Japan. And the very next turn after that, I meet Wang Kon of Korea. And the next turn after that, I meet Hannibal of Carthage. A few turns after that, I meet Mao Zedong of China.

The empire has grown! I now have access to pigs! If only I actually had Animal Husbandry...
Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

I have also finished researching fishing, so now I have started to research mining.
Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

A few turns after that, I find Mehmed II of the Ottoman. He already knows China and they annoy him. I believe I have found my first ally. (I usually have my allies picked out by 1 A.D. I am usually with Cyrus, and whomever he allies with, but I always find someone who isn;t aggressive to ally with. Agressive and me jsut don't get along...) That very turn, one of my automated scouts found a goodie hut containing ANOTHER scout, who I automated. And I have gotten a good bit of gold from goodie huts, just forgot to emntion it. And, later, after a few more turns, I meet Shaka of Zululand. I can't believe it. With me being Brennus, almsot all of the Warlords civs are here in one game. I feel so special! Anyways, Shaka already is annoyed by Otto and Korea. I found my first enemy! Along with China, as I believe, I am already sided with Korea and Otto. Hannibal has to choose or die, and Japan will probably side against me. I'm pretty sure Hannibal will join me, but we'll wait and see...

Mining is done being researched, and now I move onto bigger, better, and a lot more round things: the Wheel!
Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg

My worker is done being trained and he goes to work building a mine on the about 40 or so hills next to my town. (I can just see someone firing awwors at me from up there!) One of those automated lists comes out about the most powerful civs. I'm dead last. Yay!

I've finished carving out a wheel and have moved onto researching archery.
Civ4ScreenShot0020.jpg

My workerboat is done being crafted, so I begin a Settler.

Meanwhile, the boat goes out for clams.
Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

Now, I am finished with archery, so I choose another tech to study. I pick...agriculture!
Civ4ScreenShot0023.jpg

A few turns later, agriculture is done. Next on the Agenda is Animal Husbandry, to go get some pigs!
Civ4ScreenShot0024.jpg

And now I am finished for today. Here is one last view of my empire.

Feel free to comment on my gameplay.

I am not beelining to the first two religions because whenever I try, someone else gets them. And besides, I'd rather have a readymade missionary come with it too.

You're doing great! :goodjob:

A few small comments with some gameplay tips that you might want to consider:
1. When you found a city it always gives 2 food, 1 hammer, 1 coin (except hills/plains is 2/2/1 and founding on resources give an extra hammer or coin). So you could have made your first city on the forest on the other side of the river and it would have still been 2/1/1. I'm not saying you should have picked that, but just so you understand.
2. Your research was Fishing, Mining, The Wheel, Archery, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry. Starting at 3760 when you finished Fishing you said you could get the pigs if you had Animal Husbandry but you didn't research this for 5 more techs. I thought your research was fine but Mining didn't help much because you can only work 1 mined tile at this point until you finish your settler, Archery didn't help much because you didn't build Archers (and barbarians are turned off) and Agriculture didn't help much because you didn't build any farms. So instead of the way you chose you could have easily went: Fishing, Mining, Animal Husbandry, the Wheel, Archery/Agriculture and gotten Animal Husbandry 3 techs earlier to put a pasture on the pigs (and reveal horses).

You're off to a fine start but those are just a couple of small points that may help you in the future. Good luck!

Fair point. Moreover, I picked them in that order due to research time. I figured they would go down by the time I finished researching my way up to that point. I also forgot to mention that I chose the commerce side of the river because of the more visible resources almost immediately available in the fat cross. I wouldn't have had to wait long for the pigs, and I almost have marble, next expansion I will.

Go figure. China just knocked me flat. Mao declared on Mehmed, and a few turns later, he pulled me into the war. Mehmed made peace almost a turn later and China put their full blasting force to me. I was kicked flat. I had two archers and two warriors in everycity, one city close to the China border evern had spearmen and the liek, but that didn't stop them, oh well. I'll try to get another game going and see if I can make it into 60 A.D. this time.

These are the moments that make me thankful for worldbuilder

About allying with someone who isn't aggressive: I find it rather useful to have aggressive friends. Even though they're hard to befriend, they are the ones who can really help during wartime. Wave after wave of suicide troops will break against the enemy's cities, only for you to get the majority of them. I just have a bunch of people who will still trade with me, otherwise, friends are useless if they won't fight. Of course, the peaceful ones that will like you won't want to declare war, so just have a bunch of trading acquaintances and a real psycho. It's not like it hasn't been done before! When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Uncle Sam gave Osama Stinger missiles. And when the the Iranians stormed the U.S. Embassy, we gave all kinds of weapons to Saddam. However, we've been less successful in keeping our psycho friends under control...remember that

Hm...I think I would have settled on the spot. The world generator in Civ IV is alot better than Civ III and alot of times picks ideal starting locations. While the advantage of saving a couple of turns in the early game isn't as useful in single player or Noble as it is in multiplayer or hugher difficultues, it's a good habit to adopt. But that being said, you shouldn't always settle on the first turn just for the sake of settling on the first turn.

However I think I would have settled first turn in your case. While the clams/coastal boost is nice, they aren't really integral for a capital city. Had you settled on the spot you would have gained alot of forests for chop-rushing, plus the addead Health bonus. Where you eventually settled, there is only one forest within your fat cross.
You would have also gotten the pigs right off the bat, which kind of cancel out what negatives there were to losing the clams. Also, on hindsight, you would have also gotten Stone/Marble (I can't tell which).

But...eh, that's just my opinion. Other than that, great story so far. Look forward to more.

This looks a lot like a game log, so could you try to turn it into more of a story in some way?

stone/marble are so important, but... you wish you are lucky enough to get any of them just near your first city
For me, I'll try to locate my 2nd city near a stone/marble tile and bey that time I'll be almost able to build a quarry. But what if I could mot find one in the range I could search? Dare not to imagine:sad:
