I just moved up from cheiftian and tried a warload game. I am playing as the persians. I was so far behind in techs. But i got the great liberay. i put my reseacrch to zero and let the ai do the research. The middle ages put started and greece is cramped up against the coast and i need that coast. The other closest coast is halfway across the map. Should i continue to expand into alot of empty land or take out greece?

That depends on your overall strategy. Do you need to have any coastal cities? If so, then by all means, kill Greece. If not, then I wouldn't bother. I'd get the empty land that you mentioned before steamrolling the Greeks. Remember to declare war BEFORE attacking them, and not to have any units in their territory or any ongoing trades with them when you do this, to avoid the rep hit.

Dont rely on a.i on warlord level to do research, they suck. Built at least 5-6 city around your capital, built worker, defender, temple, library. Forget great library, expend if you can.

Increase city size to 12 with aqueduc and coliseum then marketplace. Use military police or lux slider to keeep poeple happy until you are able to built cathedral. Once your city are stablize built knight and conquier, city size 12 can produce a knight in 3-5 turn with apporiate micromanagement, so if you got 6-8 city it mean a total invasion within a few turn.
Conquier and develop, with few experience you will create WLKD and produce enough to built basic structure.

Later on you will rock under democraty.

Also don't forget as Persia you have one of the most dominant UU's in the ancient era. Now that you're in the Middle Ages, it's at less of an advantage, but I'd still take your Immortals for a spin...I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you're still behind in techs, reduce Greece by a few cities and threaten the capital with a decent sized Immortal stack. Sue for peace, and ask for as many tech as you can get your hands on (cities would work, as well). Also, use this time to secure as many lux/stat resources as possible, such that you can make the switch to Democracy as soon as you research it. :)

well the Iquirous declared war on me but before i could go killed them i signed a peace treaty. i am caught up in techs now i think that i will use my immortals i built to take out greece they have no iron because they are cramped on a tundra. i could kill them in a few turns. i am in monarchy now.

I've got to second Tassadar on techs. On Warlord, the AI sucks on tech. Research your own and get rich selling it to everybody else.

As for expanding, until you have every last inch of space claimed, just breed. Pump out the settlers and workers. forget everything else. OK, maybe a temple or library and a few spearmen, but build your infrastructure first. claim every luxury, grassland, hill, mountain (might be coal later) desert (could be oil or saltpeter) Jungle (rubber) etc. When you have your own land settled start building an army and wipe the greeks off of that coast which is rightfully yours.

the Irouquis attacked me because i had a city undefended and they took it and i am starting to get boxed in by the egyptians and the babyloinians.

Conehead,

1. don't worry about asking for advice.

2. Don't worry about being boxed in, there are only so many land tiles in the game.

Key is not to be the weakest civ. Your most immediate threat is the Babs. Egypt tends to go much more builder, but Babs will quickly go military. At least every 4 turns check military advisor and see that you are not "weak" in relationship to the Babs. If you are weak, look for friends. The more the merrier. You also need to build up a sum of cash so can buy a military alliance if Bab's come after you.

I suggest to play defense right now, built a few spearman, wall in border city and let them died on your defense, when they will lost their attack strenght contact them for peace and try to get a tech or a map or both, if you kill lots of their units they will sue for peace. Early on defense have adventage, a spearman fortify on a hills can kill 2-3 swordman. So use defensive ground to your adventage, a few horsman to counterattack their weak unit is good too.

When peace treaty is sign, built city improvment. 2 defender per city + a few horsman ( 6-10) and about 12 worker( for 8 city) should be fine.

 In the 5CC I got every tech other than Education to keep the GL. Got Military Tradition before Chivalry. So yeah, keep the AI close in techs, so you can trade for cash, but don't rely on them.

Pointless stories aside, I wouldn't expand, I'd rather take out the Greeks. I hate early game expansion (which is why I'm LOVING the five city challenge) so I'd rather build up what I have. Crank a worker or five and then develop! Keep a good military too, you never know when you're going to need it.

i am going to take out greece they are annonying me with all of the workers they send through my land. They also have no horses or iron. So i should be able to take them out easyly.
