I discovered a bug today with Civilization III: Gold Edition with respect to PBEM games.

You know how if you are the last player in the turn sequence in a PBEM game, the year will roll over to the next year at the end of your turn? Civilization III: Gold Edition does NOT do this (presumably due to a bug).

For example, if you are the last player in a turn sequence and complete your 4000 BC turn, the year should change to 3950 BC when you save the game at the end of your turn. If you are using Civilization III: Gold Edition, it will remain at 4000 BC. The result is that the game will be perpetually stuck in 4000 BC, because the year never changes. Furthermore, because everyone has completed all movement for their 4000 BC turn, the game will not allow any further movement.

The workaround: put any players who are playing with Civilization III: Gold Edition at the beginning of the turn sequence. I'm not sure I'd recommend having them host the games at this point, because there's no telling what other bugs lie in wait.

I've reported this issue to Atari Technical Support.

(Oh, and thanks for another wonderfully QA'd product, Firaxis! Maybe someday PBEM will be more than just an afterthought to you guys.)

presumably the gold edition is patched to some degree, or is it unpatched? What comes with the gold edition, is it not just Civ3 and PTW with a nice manual and picture to hang on your wall??

It's supposedly just Civ III with PTW installed and a nifty new splash screen. The current version lists as v1.27f, which is the same as the current (patched) version of PTW. However, there are evidently more than cosmetic differences.
