Was firewall really invented before the internet?

:) I found it somehow illogical that we can actually build the firewall wonder before the internet invention in Civ BNW.

well you can set acls and firewalls between local intranets if you bridge them. Given the huge amount of inaccuracies and inappropriate things the tech tree contains, this issue can't even be called a minor one.

Well, I presume the Internet technology does not simply mean closed computer networks (like the kind of scientific or military networks Internet in the real world actually originated from) but the end product of this process we have now - from that perspective the *concept* of a firewall existed before the Internet was created.

Of course, noone in real world built the Great Firewall so far - or at least there is no nation that is 99.99% immune to spies. ;)

Seriously?

A firewall was invented a million years before the Internet, it is a wall that stop fires.

The concept has been expanded in many ways to be a wall of censorship or a wall of security, but it's a old as dirt concept that has nothing to do with the Internet.

And exactly how does that translate to the Great Firewall wonder in the game? :mischief:

The standardisation that we have to day was "invented" late 80s. There was a "net" before that.

(edit: And those who used that "net" probably wanted to have it secure).

Nonsense. Everbody knows Firewall is a wall of fire, a level 4 spell. In my opinion, a level 3 fireball is much more effective.

Its funny you can build the Internet without having researched Computers...

Yes and no. The firewall was invented before the public Internet was generally available. Networking itself was invented back in the 60s, with the advent of ARPANET. The concepts of the modern Internet were there, but it was restricted to military use, then eventually opened up to higher education institutions.

It wasn't until the World Wide Web was designed in the late 80s that what we'd recognize as the modern 'net started to take shape. A few limited commercial ISPs started up around that time, but it wasn't until 1995 that all the restrictions were lifted, allowing anyone to start up an ISP.

So, if you count the WWW as the invention of the modern Internet, then yes the firewall was invented first. If you count ARPANET as the invention of the Internet, firewalls were created alongside it, so they're part and parcel of the same technology.

Reminds me of the old Civfanatics debate: What came first; the Alphabet or Writing?

Agreed. Level 3 Fireball is much more versatile.

Well you can't write things without an Alphabet...

And what's the point with an alphabet if not to make a system to learn others to write and remember the letters? ;) Seems logical that the writing came first, the organization of the letters later. But in older Civ games with the Alphabet Tech, alphabet was always researched first and needed to research writing.

I'm almost certain writing was invented first. It was likely used for people to keep track of things. But everybody had their own unique symbols. So if person A wrote something, person B and Person C could not read it. Over generations, things probably got a little more standardized so that everybody in a community or a village could read eachother's writing. But somebody from a village 20 miles away couldn't read it.

As things developed eventually people needed more standardization so that anybody with an education who speaks the language can understand what everybody else is writing. And so over more generations of time, the alphabet sort of just evolved into being.

I'm sure not every community did this. But a lack of standardized writing put them at a great disadvantage to those that did. Those who could communicate and keep records efficiently eventually conquered those who could not, and the victors then spread their language/culture/alphabet/etc. to the newly conquered lands. This process went on until the alphabet spread around the world. (although different regions have different styles of alphabets. Western alphabets vs Eastern alphabets for example).

Today with the internet and airplanes and everything, things will continue to become more standardized. In a few hundred years the whole world will probably have one culture, one alphabet, and one language. And there will probably only be one race, because all races will mix and meld into one.

What does Firewall gives you, something to do with culture/tourism? It's just a good spot for it, gameplay and balance-wise. Think of it as something else and just pay attention to the attributes instead.

An Expert Level Fireball (Incinerator) is more effective than a Master Level Wall of Fire, which takes too long to charge up.
