So, as title says, preferred civ, preferred map type, etc. (tech path, culture opening) assuming you do play the occasional water game.

I picked Ottomans b/c it's the only Civ listed that I've played on a water map so far (Large, Archipelago, Emperor) and it went very well. Currently I'm playing as Maya on a water map (it's a Large random map type so not exactly sure which) and I was doing so-so until I got battleships and decimated Persia's navy which was at one point 8% ahead of me in Lit and a 3-1 advantage in military size (as seen on the Demographics screen).

I feel that the AI is just awful at naval warfare, much worse than it is at land combat imo, so water maps seem easier to me.

Carthage is my number one. England is close second. Tiny islands (Easy) or Archipelago (bit harder).

3 (rarely 4) Cities Tradition start. NC before turn 80.

Usual tech path: Sailing - Mining - Optics - Philosophy - The Wheel (Cash) - Bronze working (Barracks everywhere) - Compass (Start building Galleases everywhere) - Iron working - Education @ tun 100 - 110 (rush 1-3 universities with cash) - Navigation. (Upgrade)

2 Armies of 7+ Frigates & 2-3 Privateers (each) will usually kill everyone in under 200 turns. I play Deity btw.

If Iron is scarce, i might end up having one army of 10 Frigates or something similar.

I voted England (I'm English, it wasn't a hard choice to make :)). However, I would like to give a shout out to Persia. Haven't played them on archipelago before, but last time I played continents I'm pretty sure the movement and combat bonuses applied to naval and embarked units too. Add that to a powerhouse economy civ, and you're pretty much set. Also, when you do need to go inland on small continents, they're set for that too.

I voted Carthage for standard maps. Extra gpt is huge with this civ. Only Byzantines can beat them on smaller maps and easy access to capitals from shores. The Dromon can wipe out everyone pretty easily.

England is more well suited for small continents and continent type of games. Still, Carthage is slightly better if you can settle a couple of cities near the coast.

I'd taken 'water maps' to be anything from small continents down (and obviously exactly which map you think of will alter the decision). Would be interesting to see what the OP had intended with this......

Yup, to be more clear, I guess we could have 3 major categories; large islands, archipelago, and tiny islands (I think that's one of the options, but if not, just the first 2. Also interesting to see Dido coming out on top. She is pretty good, but Ned and Byz seem just as good, but have better bonuses throughout the game.

Just cant get over how huge of a start it is to play polynesia on a large map with like 6 civs on deity. Huts galore means I can keep up with the AI in early game and beeline compass then navigation faster. Though i wish their UU was better... to me Polynesia's start on archipelago is OP as hell.
