I played a map once that had no fur. Of course, all of my cities demanded fur.

Cities will always demand a luxury you currently don't have unless/until you acquire all of them.

I've had maps with a lone Pearl resource. Also have had CS walls in the past. I tried Americas map a couple of times and in both games killed off CS settlers in the first turn. Have had civs with islands/continents to themselves. Once I got a Terra map with something very closely resembling Europe.
