America

Just because they seem to always be the most fun to play as and against. I like Spain too, though, but that's just because Isabella's awesome to play as.

There have been more or less 7 great dominant empires in the world: in rough chronological order.

Egypt (Late Kingdom)
Greece (okay, I know Alexander was Macedonian)
China (Han, Tang, or Ming dynasties)
Rome (this should be obvious, under Augustus Caesar)
Arabia (The Abbasid Caliphate around 800-1000 AD)
Britain (1880 or so)
America (present day)

America is no where near an Empire or even near an empires power (in comparison to other soverign states), and the Mongol Empire would come way above America.

Plus the british empire was at its powerfulest at about 1840 - 1850 (However it was very powerful right up to the end of WWII!)

Well that's not true. The height of the British Empire was actually the first few decades of the 20th century (c. 1900-1930).

Rome
Greece
England
Egypt
China

Rome, the only Empire was as large as the whole Europe, who can obviate it when talking about histories?
Greece, the first western civ i knew when I was young.
England, the father of industry. when i was an idiot student, England was the Europe that took root my mind.
Egypt, one of the oldest and outstanding civ in human history.
China, begining from about 3000BC between Yellow River and Long River, never has have a state religion, united to departed, departed to united again again and again, with the most glorious and the most humble history, with the most population (it's hard to find a place without Chinese in the world), with as large as European territory, with the longest living Civ to now days, with the most franky and the most mysterious traditions, with the most cheap labors... could anybody tell one reason not picking China always be in Civ?

I like this list of yours, but why Greece and Rome, which have almost the same cultural identity? Their gods differed only in names.
I would put instead one of them Persia/Babylonia; but i cannot decide which one should be off then - Rome or Greece?

but, there are only five candidates.
it is hard to decide which one should be off. but, I was really confused by Rome and Greece in my young ages. i even thought they are the same:blush:
Babylonia's legend is just folk stories to me, i won't pick it.
er... maybe Persia can take the place of Rome, because they both separated into several independent countries in the end.

Well one that I'm fine with not being in, is America. It atleast narrows my list by a little. Not cause I don't like America. I just think it's stupid to be fighting them in 3500BCE.

You could say that about almost every civ on the list. Conversely you could say it doesn't make any sense for civs that were only relevant in ancient times to be on the list since their period of glory was a few hundred years of ancient history and after that they were nonfactors in history.

There were people living in north america in ancient times - and while they may not have produced monuments and other advances in civilization compared to say, the Greeks, they did exist. The Greeks had huge impact for a couple hundred years hundreds of years ago, and now the Greek people have about as much impact on the world as native americans did 3000 years ago.

Civ is a game, not a history simulation. The civs involved were dominanat for various reasons throughout history, but not necessarily for all of history.

Like the Hitler debate, this is another one of those dead horse beating issues, where there is no real answer, just various opinions.

In no particular order:

Rome
Egypt
Greece
England
France

China .. still standing... since i dont know when...
India too...
Americans.... yeah... over the passed century.. hollywood and billboard has affected the world in many ways. too many cultural bombs ( great artists)
Spain...who invented galleon?
last but not least Greece. Saint Seiya ! rofl.. art and cultural ... Greece affected alot of countrys or civis they made an impact... and alexander fought his way to india..... I dont think in modern times... any countrys' infantry or commandos or special units can do it.. I leave it to u to imagine..

Which ones have lasted, or still have the most influence?

China (longevity/population)
India (longevity/population)
Spain (cultural influence in Americas)
Britain (cutural influence/global reach)
Arabia (cultural influence/global reach)

I don't think it can be limited to just five though; I'd add a second division to the premier league:
Mongols (virtually everyone in Asia can claim to be related to Genghis)
Rome/Greece (cultural influences on later empires)
Egypt (longevity)
Persia (longevity)
Germany (longevity)
Russia (global reach)

Then there are the civs that are culturally distinctive for one reason or another: Aztecs/Incas, Japan, Ottomans, Vikings, Mali etc. I reckon America is too recent to judge properly (and in the long run, may count as an offshoot/successor to Britain... not that I want a barrage of flames from outraged Americans over this statement!)

I think there's plenty of room for more... Even the French. 8-)

The Romans copied a lot from the Greeks, not least myths which they then appended to their own gods, but their culture was very different in many respects. For example, they had few if any great philosophers, no great tragedy writers, no great scientists. The literature they had was mostly very derivative. What they did have was a great gift for organization, legislation and administration, and the best soldiers in the world. They also learned to become great architects.

If you look at the modern world, from east to west, the 5 dominant powers are:

China (how can anyone ignore it?)
India (second largest population and one of the most ancient cultures)
Arabia (huge impact, the link between east and west)
Rome (and its lasting influence on Spain, France, Portugal and their colonies)
Germany/England (non-latin europeans)

What strikes me as odd is that Arabia wasn't even part of the main list (I had to vote 'others')...

Cheers!

How do you contend that the Romans have continued to today? China is the only civilization that has been an independent nation continuously since what? 3000BC? I forget what year exactly...
Anyway, here's my list
1. China
2. Rome
3. Greece
4. Egypt
5. England

if you count that a civ thats old and still exists today then you have to count in Israel who has been around for 3000 years and counting

Egypt, Persia, Rome, Mongols, England. The greatest world empires ever.

They lost their independence after the Roman conquest and did not gain their land back until 1948.

I think that if this was asked as leaders then I would say I can take any except Louis. I totally loathe him.

You are clearly stupid because you think size is power, the British empire may not have been at its biggest at 1840 - 1850 but it was far far beyond any other nation in terms of technoligy and manufacturing power, by the 1880s+ Germany and the US had caught up and Britain had competition and so though it was bigger it was no where near as powerful as it was in 1840 to 1850.
