what about the little things?

Most of the ideas here concern broad, sweeping changes to the game mechanics which will have drastic and controvercial effects on the game.
I would like to pause and think for a minute about the ~little~ things that are a bit annoying at first, but eventually become...well, very annoying I suppose.
For me, I hate the way the on-screen buttons shuffle around. I'm tired of telling three guys to buld a railroad and suddenly the next one is building a fortress, or even worse, is automated and runs off to god knows where.
Also, when dealing with specialists on the city screen why do they have to dodge around as the number of happy people changes? one minute I'm clicking an entertainer and the next I'm clicking the scientist who was next to him! It drives me maaaaaaaaad

You've made a very good point!
Buttons should stay at the same position, as popheads should do.

Another thing: at the governors screen, why do I have to open a pull down menu for just 2 options: yes/no?

The same could be done with a radio button more easily.

that is, what I would call ergonomics!

@Bartelby, you are absolutely correct on both points!

I don't like having to click on pop-heads anyway - it would be nice if there were a slider or type of graphic interface that lets you set the number or percentage of each kind of specialist without having to change each one.

What annoys me is that i always have to contact other civs to check how many turns an alliance is going. There should be a better overview at the forreign affairs.
Also the "smooth" scrolling, but that will hopefully change with a new grafic engine.
And where the heck has the battle history gone to? I want to see how many units i have lost/destroyed during the game.
I only play Vanilla and i don't know if some of that has changed with the add ons.

@Deranger - you don't have to check with each civ - you can see what trades are active through your foreign advisior window. There are 3 tabs to the right of the screen (where it ususally lists the types of alliances) if I recall correctly, one of which says which trades are active. (I don't have the game open - is this only a feature in conquests?)

yep, but it tells you just about the trades ongoing with the currently selected leader head. So, if you are playing with more than just 8 civs, you have to select the one in question from the dropdown menu.
I agree that this as just annoying

Yeah, but at least in [civ3], it says only what is currently active, while Deranger (and I) want to know how many more turns it will last. That could be accomplished just by showing a number next to the line connecting the leaderheads

@bartleby- if you use the keyboard shortcuts that account for each action, you don't have the problem, but most people don't use these. I ran into another civ playere just a week ago, which showed me many more shortcuts.

The governor thing is a real pain (pull-down menu).

I realise this and occasionally do use the keyboard, however I play on a laptop and the keyboard is not the most convenient...no numeric keypad etc., which means that the mouse is actually quicker.

It would be useful to have the menu buttons also fixed and grey out the buttons that cannot be used rather than hiding them and moving the other buttons...

I find it frustrating too that the buttons move around. Often times I need to chase that worker that took off on some job I didn't tell it to do. Rather, didn't mean to tell it to do.

But one is afraid that graying them out would only confuse people.... I know in the past I've had that problem with the editor. Trying to find the option to turn on the greyed out button. Of course, a tool tip could fix this pretty easily.

I guess the icons could be hidden but not move around... But then people might wonder where the icons haves gone and wy there are random spaces...
