What are all the errors in the sucky manual?

I have to say the manual absolutely sucks.

I want actual formulas to compute things, and the manual instead gives vague statements, like telling us more units will be higher maintenance. I want to know how many votes you need for a diplomatic victory, and the manual says you need "enough votes." I don't know whether Firaxis was aiming for a lack of transparency to keep the fanatical people busy figuring things out, or aiming to give a dumbed down presentation so that the casual player is not overwhelmed.

The worst thing about the manual, however, is the outright false information. I keep noticing another error, which probably all come because they kept changing things after the manual was written and forgot to check the manual.

The absolutely worst error in the manual is saying that cities can work tiles within 2 squares. The correct number is 3, and this completely :):):):)ed up my first few games and gave me needless frustration.

Another big error in the manual is saying that puppet cities give you gold and research. Technically this is not an error, but it implies puppet cities do not give culture. They should also have added that puppet cities cost you happiness.

The manual certainly should also have said that the more cities you have the more culture you need for a social policy. Without knowing this, how can someone plan for a cultural victory?

Let's focus on the outright errors. Does anyone have a list of other errors in the manual? I can't remember them all, and there are probably a bunch of wrong things in the manual that I am assuming are correct.

Like most games, the manual was written months before the final build, when a lot of specific formulae and mechanics were still in flux.

That one just friggin' floored me when I found out. I've been trying to expand to build culture, then I find out I shouldn't be doing that! I'm a peaceful Civ player that likes cultural or scientific wins rather than dukeing it out with the AI, so that would have been real useful information.

Nothing to do with the manual, but has anyone else noticed that when you start up a game as the French thier ability is show as 'Ancien Regime' .. lol

Why is this funny?

I take it you're not familiar with French history? The Ancien Régime was the class based system France was ruled by during the monarchy. The French Revolution was a rebellion against this feudalistic system and created a republic... eventually.

I agree - the manual is terrible. It seems geared towards brand new Civ players instead of Civ Veterans (this makes sense I suppose, but you'd think there would be some sort of 'advanced' section meant to guide the people who played Civ IV extensively).

Please oh please tell me he doesn't think they mis-spelled "Ancient", and is complaining about the missing acute accent.

Ok so I'm not a history buff lol. It just looks like it was mispelled, and seriously with all the other errors in the manual and the civilopedia who could blame me?

Unless you were only going to play one game, and only one game ever of CiV, then I don't see why this is even remotely a big deal.

This manual is not any different from any other typical game manual. If you want all the down and dirty, then that's what strategy guides are for.

Hmmmm. How many points is it for misspelling the word "misspell" when you are correcting someone else's spelling?

I wasn't sure about it, so I looked at the post above mine and copied his spelling for that word.

Anyone who knows anything about history, or anyone who would think to *check* before complaining?

Just because you know history doesn't mean you can blame other people for not knowing history. "Ancien Regime" looks a lot like a typo for "Ancient Regime" and given that there are numerous other typos and inaccurate information in the manual, it's perfectly reasonable to assume this is another typo. "Ancient" is a common word, and the term "Ancient Regime" makes sense- it's not something random like "Ancient Purple" that makes no sense.

I'd argue that it would be very strange of someone to check if there was an "Ancien Regime" in this situation, just like it would be strange if you checked if the spelling on "Status of Liberty" was correct. When all the evidence points to an obvious typo, it's perfectly logical to conclude that it's an obvious typo. The fact that you happened to know something that isn't common knowledge doesn't change that.

You made a mistake and he called you on it. Take it like a man and just accept it .

Yeah, well, some of us live this game and some don’t. Some of us are just here to get a hint or two. Some of us don’t live this game day and night; we are bystanders yet play the game anyway. I apologize for disappointing you.

I don't blame them for not knowing about things.
But I can blame them for complaining about it without checking, and thus making a fool of themself.

Are you upset that there aren't any cheat codes, as well?

Seriously, you played a game, and learned about the finer points of how culture works. Great. Play again and try for a culture win. Casual players and diehard fans alike are probably going to play more than once or twice.

Not much different than any computer game ever created. Everything is not laid out before you. If it was, it would be boring as hell to learn different strategies of the game.

to be fair, the manual did mispell "statue of liberty".

And the yield and resource hotkeys are erroneously listed as being Control + R & Y when they're just R & Y.

And in the tables all the "i"s are capitalized, so "ballistics" looks like "balllstlcs".

I mean, it's like no one even looked at the finished manual before they pushed it out the door.
