What are the effects of being negative Supply?

Spent pretty much the entire game with negative Supply. No tooltip on Supply that I can detect. The inclination is to think Something Bad will be happening. Reduced city production or something of the sort. But I can't find an explanation anywhere.

The only thing I have seen was it decreases your production. I recruited a ton of defector doing a OCC. Its a red line next to the resource bar at the top when you go over supply. It is rare for your civ to not be able to support a army.

It can be a pretty hefty production penalty. As far as I could tell, it's 10% PER UNIT. I had 34 units and my civilization could only support 30, and it was a 40% production penalty in all cities.

Unlike Civ, it's not so rare in BtE, since it includes all units, not just military units, including all those traders, satellites and workers. It's not uncommon that 70-80% of player support is getting eaten by civilians.

Ow. On average over the course of 700+ turns, I was at @-20 Supply. But that didn't seem to hinder my growth or production all that much

Anybody know the formula for just how max Supply is calculated?

Hmm...
So according to bug report, traders are not counted as supply unit, they are added to supply in UI by mistake.

I guess that makes getting into supply problem much less an issue.

Exempt if playing with single city. I just remember one other thread in this forum where someone had supply problem (with low supply actually being penalty to him).

EDIT:
Makes me a fool in my last game for not trying to build more. My military was always effective but scaled down to 20-30% of units total, due to thinking that all those traders eat my supply.
