I started playing with Civ 4 in December 2005. It's pretty stupid to say I'm new to the series, that's still 5 years to one game, a lot more than any other series can dream.
I played civ 1 on the snes for years. A friend had civ 2 on the PSX which I tried, then went out and bought civ 2 for the pc after it had been out for a while. The music was so awesome, particularly the Russian diplomacy music, which is Stars And Stripes sort of rearranged into a different key. Whenever I hear the imperial march, I think in my head how that obscure little tune from a console port of civ is way more bad ass.

Also, you poll is missing Civ II: Test of Time.
It was basically identical to Civ II, except it had overhauled graphics similar to Civ 3 and support for multiple maps in custom games. I remember it shipped with an AlphaCentauri/CivII hybrid that allowed you to transport units between the two planets (now that I think about it, it may have been a moon or mars colony), and there was a way watt more intricate version of that fantasy mod (Nibelungenleid, I think), with separate maps for the normal, undersea, subterranean and underworld (as in dead things). It was frigid awesome.

Started with Call to Power... I'd read at the time that it got a bad rap from people at the time for some reason, but I loved it.
I've played every one since then sans CTP2, and the best hands down is... Alpha Centauri. That was by far the greatest strategy game I've played of all time. They really need to remake it.

I started with Civ 1 but I was only about 10 years old then. Mostly played on the second easiest difficulty, rush to Mathematics, wtfpwn everyone with Catapults
