Who says the region needs or even deserves representation? They never developed any form of civilisation, so what makes them deserving of representation in a game that goes by that very name?

I would like to see a definition of 'civilization' that would include all civilizations currently in the game but excludes Polynesians.

Polynesians, after all, were sedentary, had agriculture, language, division of labor, dense populations, complex social/political organization, trade, accumulation of material wealth and technology, and art. They certainly weren't mere cavemen as I recall.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or offer more evidence as I'm really no expert on the subject.

How about the literal one, i.e. "cities". Civilisation is Latin for, roughly, "the behaviour of one who lives in a city", which excludes the Polynesians, a people who never built anything bigger than a village. Of course, it may also exclude the Zulus, but they're a questionable choice as it is.
If you want a more complex definition, Wikipedia has some examples.
Besides, even if the Polynesians were a legitimate civ, then their historical impact is so incredibly minor that I'd place them about 53rd on my list of desired civs, right between Luxembourg and the Isle of Man.

i now again list the three definitions of civilizaiton that i found on the net:

1. an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached.
2. those people or nations that have reached such a state.
3. any type of culture, society, etc., of a specific place, time, or group: Greek civilization.

IF definition 3 is the one that Firaxis mainly uses (and i think it is), then Polynesia may work, although if you want to go into specifics Hawaii or something then...

Going with #1, Polynesians may count as well. It depends on the definition of Advanced.

Also Runik is an example of a Polynesian Town that exceeds Wikipedia's definition of a Village.

Hittites. Just because of Civ 3.

i think also romania would be a good civ ,i mean vlad tepes kept the ottomans from invadeing western europe, just a thought it would be great having vlad tepes as a leader

The Austrian-Hungarian monarchy was a first ranked European empire during the 19th - 20th century untill World War 1. In the game "Diplomcy" it is one of the seven existing European empires. It is remarkeble that in any Civilization version or game expantion pack untill now this empire is not represented.

they were sort of represented as a "secret civ" of Civ3: Conquests with an Austrian Civ.

Yeah- Firaxis had done all the work they needed for the civ- the leaderhead even appeared in some of the Conquests scenarios and was widely used in scenarios and mods- they just had to drop it at the last minute when it turned out that the interface couldn't handle more than 31 civs without going funny. And, as all the other civs in the expansion were more interesting, important or significant, Austria were dropped.

Sorry, but there are only 24 slots.

My take:

Canada - no, hardly any "colonial" civilization deserves to be in since they are simply too young (US is an exception since it is a world superpower)
Sioux - no, Native Americans are enough
Iroquois - ditto
Mexico - see Canada
Brazil - ditto
Argentine - ditto
Sweden - Vikings are enough, although they could get being renamed to Scandinavia
Denmark - ditto
Poland - yes
Austria - offshoot of Germany, imo (though Germany or HRE could get a Hapsburg leader)
Israel - yes
Hittites - yes
Morocco - no, falls under Arab
Benin - not sure
Congo - not sure
Pakistan - nope
Indus Civilization - nope
Burma - yes
Thailand - yes
Vietnam - yes
Indonesia - yes
Polynesia - yes
Australian Aboriginals - you got to be kidding me
Commonwealth of Australia - see Canada

By Martinus:
Burma - yes
Thailand - yes
Vietnam - yes
Indonesia - yes
Polynesia - yes

That will overcrowd SE Asia. I'm for Vietnam + Siam, but that's it.

i would've kicked the byzantines and HRE out for Poland and Polynesia.

And yes i would've switched khmer for vietnam as well.

Bulgaria should have been in.
