What do you call yours?

i keep forgetting you can name units! by the time i get all the main stuff done i hit end turn (i usually forget to check the 'enemy near...', too). there should be some sort of smug message box that comes up with "haven't you forgotten something?"

I started to name my ships in Civ 3 to keep them straight when tranporting troops in ship stacks. Now I just do it to give character.

Usually I try to name early ships after gods or mythology. Exploration ships are named after explorative concepts (ex..Voyager, Explorer).

In Civ 3 I always named my armies, but have yet to do it in civ iV.

When naming land units, i will often give them a name appropriate their unit type.

For example, i will name low experience units something like 1st Infantry, but if their experience goes beyond 5 (i.e. elite) I will name them Grenadier Guards, Highlanders, Colstream Guards. As you can tell, i play as England quite a lot - and yes, i know, the highlanders are Scottish.

Cavalry units would work the same way - 1st, 2nd, 3rd Cavalry, and then when they become elite i would rename them again to Queens Royal Lancers, Kings Own and so on.

If i play as another country, i don't always do this. I don't know the countries well enough, but i might give elite units a cool sounding name.

I usually name my naval vessels, and very successful land units. Of course, I'll usually name them after something to do with Charles Darwin, my hero. :D

On a whim when my first warrior killed some panthers I named it the 'Panther Brigade' thinking I would level it up throughout history. 5 turns later a bear at it.

Such a sad story. The brave little warrior was all proud, showing off his medals to his civ-mates...suddenly, it all turns into an episode of "When Animals Attack."

I name my units before a big offensive. Normally I got two armies, sometimes 3 in late game, so they get named acoording the the direction of their attack, N, S, or E, W.
Followed by a number, counting from 1 upwards, I got up to 152 in my last warmongering game.
Followed by a letter to discribe it's function, D for defensive, S for spearhead, and M for units with Medic promotions, and nothing if it's just a normal attacker.

So a typical unit would be N31S for: Army group North; 31st unit to be named; and Spearhead meaning it has quite a few promotions.

It's quite something when you look back near the end of the game. Oh, I reserve 7, 27 and 38 for my best units. 7 for 7th Panther division in WWII; 27th Corps PR china; and 38th Corps PR China.

It doesn't take as long as it sounds, just a couple of minute counting numbers.

As for navy, snack names: HMS Rolo, HMS Mars, USS Walkers, USS Pepperoni......

Surely no-one is quite this sad.

Easy , when you have the unit selected , just click on its picture in the lower left hand corner of the screen.

I used to rename my units in the last civ. I haven't had the chance to in civ4, still learning the basics, but I'm sure I will.
