Not really that close. Again, hip-hop is more lyrical, while rap is the stuff that makes you want to dance. it will probably have a nice beat but poor lyircs. Example: Chingy "Right Thurr" or Nelly "Tip Drill." Some artists that do typical hip-hop songs are Masta Ace, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Nas, to name a few.

What would you class Eminem, 50 pence sorry I mean cent, Snoop Dogg, Nate Banks etc as?

To me they are pure rap and have only ever heard 50 cent 'In da Club' actually in a club.

The clubs I go to mainly play Outkast, Ice Cube etc which I think is hip hop.

Are you trying to tell me people would rather dance to 'Cleaning out my cloest' then 'Hey Yeah' ?

Rap is not club music!

Edit: I like a few hip hop and rap songs but most of really is utter poo! I must say I was proud of the hello everyone gave 50 cent at reading :)

Sometimes okay, sometimes boring, sometimes annoying, sometimes funny. Mostly boring, though. (voted for the third option)

I love the beat, but have a problem with some 'artists' lyrics. Those I dont' listen too. May favorite music types are R&B or modern country.

I puke on almost all hiphop/rap/r&b.
Most lyrics are just laughable bad and the beat is so slow it's just boring.

Few exceptions: Beastie boys and Outkast (maybe a few others that I don't know) who actually release songs that are worth listening to.

What are you talking about? To me the definition is the exact opposite. Chingy's music is hip hop, not rap. Rapping is all about the lyrics. If the lyrics aren't good, then the song isn't worth listening too, really (except when the music is really good). This is why I don't like listening to rock most of the time: it has horrible lyrics.

I've never been a big fan of rap. I respect it, but just never been into it (except for the Beastie Boys back in the day). But I'm a metalhead jazz fusionist Primus funk progressive Zappa freak, so I don't have clue of the difference between rap and hip hop (honestly thought hip hop was a type of the rap genre).

However, I do enjoy Eminem's stuff, for some strange reason. My drummer thinks I'm losing it, as he has a deep hatred for anything with rap vocals in it (including Rage Against the Machine!).

But I've had to do vocals, so I can see the talent in it. I just don't have any respect for the constant sampling and lack of originality that seems to plague the genre...although, that could probably be said about MOST types of music these days.

Ah yes, this topic again.

I like the beats and overall sound of rap music, although I admit the lyrics are usually lacking intellectually speaking (no different from most other music, though). And although there is some rap with deep lyrics (Tupac's stuff, etc.), it's usually over a very boring beat.

And my distinction between hip hop and rap is different from all of yours'.

Hip hop refers to a distinct urban, African American culture, including not only rap music but also the associated fashions, the slang, and the overall inner-city lifestyle (graffiti, prostitution, etc.). The sentence, "I like listening to hip hop" isn't technically correct; "I like listening to hip hop music" or "I like listening to rap" is more appropriate.

@Akka: Why do you hate rap so much? I can understand not liking it, but...

Don't know.
But the very sound of a rap-rythm makes me clinch my teeth, and when the guy starts to talk, I feel the urge to kick into the speaker to make him shut up.

Rap ? Dance ? Is this a joke ?
The only thing it makes me want to do is to cringe my teeth and tear the speaker apart.

Nah, sorry, but for a non-specialist like me, they just sound exactly the same.

Rap lyric:

Nelly said:
Who am I you ask me you know it's bout that grammar
From any state it don't matter, from here to Montana
From whit girls name Anna, to old ladies name Nanna
They hold'n up they banners, and run'n wit they cameras

Hip-hop lyric:

Immortal Technique said:
The bling-bling era was cute but it's about to be done
I leave ya full of clipse like the moon blocking the sun
my metaphors are dirty like herpes but harder to catch
like an escape tunnel in prison I started from scratch

That is the difference between rap and hip hop, in brief.

 Nelly = Pop / Hip Hop. I don't know who Immortal Technique is.

Listen to some Atmosphere and Aesop Rock before you say that hip-hop isn't lyrically complex.

Rap music, specifically the "gangsta" kind, however, sucks majorly :D

I don't necessarily call the ones with excessively vulgar lyrics automatically bad.

For example, right now I'm listening to [explative] the police by N.W.A, and I really think it's a great song.

P.S. I don't understand how gangster rap is so terrible because of the lyrics, and the average "I hate everything. Life sucks. the government sucks. Kill yourself" song is somehow deep!?

Well, sorry, but I don't really see a difference in style.

Anyway, when it comes to listening the song, it doesn't change anything for me : what I can't bear is the rythm and the style of speaking, not really what's said (I wouldn't be able to understand the spoken lyrics anyway).

Last time I saw that much crap was when we toured the sewage treatment plant on a field trip.

I have to admit though it has to take some skill to come up with some of those rhymes.

Also my views were a little shaken with the release of GTA: SA with Carl's homie OG Loc.

Immortal Technique is one of the best rappers.

Dance With the Devil is a really, really good song. Download it (legally, of course).

I like it, but I don't like a lot of the new stuff. Tupac is the best for me.

Yep, the only rap CD I ever listen to anymore is Tupac and Outlaws: Still I rise.

Edit: even though I'm not a big rap fan, Bone thugs n' harmony really kick arses, especially with THE ART OF WAR.
