What does the acronym DOW mean?

Declaration of War. :)

It's used wrong though. People say 'the AI DOWed me', when they should say 'the AI gave me a DOW'. Kinda annoying.

There is a similar phenomenon in WOW, people always say "Please PST Me" when PST = "Please Send Tell"

I guess people eventually interpret the acronym as having its own meaning and forget about the words that its supposed to represent.

"UPC Code" "ATM Machine" etc

But here, DOW is a noun and is used as a verb. I always use wardec.

So, what's the difference between "bulb" and "tech"? I think it means "bulb" is using a great scientist, but why is it called "bulb"?

Science was depicted as Light Bulbs in Civ IV. Once you had enough bulbs, you got a tech, but a Great Science gives you a tech at once.

"to bulb" a tech is to get it through the use of a great person. The term comes from civ IV , where the UI symbol for that is a incandescent bulb.

Thank you for posting this. Half the time I have no idea what people are talking about.

You're welcome :)
It can be frustrating to see everyone using these and you don't know what they mean.

thats what that means? i always thought it was a shorter word for whisper. like "i psted my friend to cut a gem for me" since whispering is usually represented in cartoons by "pstpstpst" and such

Science was actually depicted as beakers in Civ IV as well, but when you popped a GP (great person) for a icon on that action was a light bulb, hence bulbing. Now the symbol is a beaker and I've seen some people call it beakering now, but most still call it bulbing.

Ah that makes the most sense yet. It also explains why the beaker lights up yellow when you use a great person.

By the way, it looks more like an Erlenmeyer flask, not a Beaker to me.

I used the acronym, DOW, in a project for American History once.

Pretty much any semi-popular game gets a lot of acronyms built up by its player base, probably more so in multiplayer games where the names of weapons/spells/tools/attacks/enemies/etc get acronymed asap.
