What games deserve a remake?

Id like to see someone try to modernize the old Panzer General series of games. Decent graphics and a better interface coupled with more campaigns would make a remake of those games worth buying. I played my old PS1 version a couple of months ago and it seemed hopelessly clunky and dated.

sound like a good idea...same goes for the original Battle Isle :)

and Silent Service ...

Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake! That would give Konami something to do for 3 years lol.

There is a theory that Metal Gear Solid is a remake of one of those games.

Anyways, GamePro had a list of the top 10 games deserving of remakes. I'm going to comment on each one.

10. Castlevania (1987)
Ooh, gimme gimme gimme!
9. Halo (2001)
No, no, no, and NO!!!!! How are they going to improve on the repetitive (from what I've heard)level design!!!
8. Kid Icarus (1987)
Now this definetely needs a remake. Especially considering how a whole new generation of gamers now know Pit due to SSBB.
7. Road Rash (1991)
What the hey is this?!!!
6. The Seven Cities of Gold (1984)
See above.
5. Final Fantasy VII (1997)
There are rumors that this game is being remade.
4. DOOM (1993)
Hasn't this game already seen a remake called DOOM 3????
3. The Legend of Zelda (1987)
Well, Metroid has been remade, so why not this?
2. Flashback: The Quest for Identity (1992)
I've never heard of this in my whole life!!!
1. Tetris (1985)
This game has seen remake after remake after remake after remake. IMO it should not even be in the top 5, let alone #1.

NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but anyway......I'm bored so here goes:

10. Castlevania
psssh......whatever
9. Halo: CE
what? that was less than ten years ago......NO
8. Kid Icarus
Yes, I think it should be made
7. Road Rash
wth? never heard of this game
6. The Seven Cities of gold
yes, yes, and yes, I loved it
5. Final Fantasy VII
I think it's already being made
4. DOOM
already making doom 4.....TAKE A REST FROM IT ALREADY
3. The Legend of Zelda
no, it's already made, so MOVE ON NINTENDO
2. Flashback: The Quest for Identity
never heard of
1. Tetris
YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!! MAKE IT

10. Castlevania (1987)
Ooh, gimme gimme gimme!
Only if redone as an RPG with some sort of item database for weapons and armor.
9. Halo (2001)
No, no, no, and NO!!!!! How are they going to improve on the repetitive (from what I've heard)level design!!!
Probably by by making it non-repetative? I don't see why they need to remake Halo... they just did, its called Halo 3.
7. Road Rash (1991)
What the hey is this?!!!
Something you missed out on due to your age. This gets a big fat yes from me. And give us more weapons. This game would make a fortune off us gamers form the NES/SEGA days.
5. Final Fantasy VII (1997)
There are rumors that this game is being remade.
It doesn't need a remake, it needs a sequel.
4. DOOM (1993)
Hasn't this game already seen a remake called DOOM 3????
Agreed.
3. The Legend of Zelda (1987)
Well, Metroid has been remade, so why not this?
Maybe. Only if they plan on doing a sort of "Batman Begins" thing with it where they start over the story and this time have it set up to be an ongoing story through sequels. Otherwise, I see no point. The Zelda series is doing rather well as is IMO.
2. Flashback: The Quest for Identity (1992)
I've never heard of this in my whole life!!!
Oh hell YES. (Thats a bigger yes than anything else on this list.) I always wanted a sequel to this one but I would happily accept a remake. The innovation behind this game was way ahead of its time. This was the "Mass Effect" of the Sega Genesis. I honestly thought the game was a hidden gem out there as hardly anyone has heard of this game. If this game was made right with today's game designs for inspiration such as Mass effect and soon Alpha Protocol and such, this game could seriously be the next big title for RPG/Adventure fans.
1. Tetris (1985)
This game has seen remake after remake after remake after remake. IMO it should not even be in the top 5, let alone #1.
Agreed this game should be banned from the list in general. Why does falling blocks need a remake? This game should have come out on atari its so simplistic.

I never got to play Kid Icarus (although I have seen it before I dont remember much about it.) nor Seven cities of Gold (only heard of it.)

Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007 should be remade, borrowing conventions from modern-day FPSs.

A Zelda I remake would have Phantom Hourglass graphics and additions that the sequels have made.

Oh and Yoshi's Story should be remade (just kidding!).

This was the "Mass Effect" of the Sega Genesis.
Sega what now? Flashback was originally a PC game, and was released for several platforms. I have the Super NES version.

Also, shame on those of you who haven't heard of it. Go track down a copy; it's actually aged fairly well - as King Flevance said, it was ahead of its time - and I've seen several copies of the SNES version floating around, so it's not too hard to find.

Wow, I always thought it was Genesis only. I had a SNES and my brother had a Genesis. I only ever saw it come out on Sega, so I assumed it was one of the few games of the time that were actually console exclusive back then.

Castlevania I being remade with conventions from Symphony of the Night and more recent games in the series makes sense. That what's being done to basically every remake of a game from the '80s (e.g. Metroid: Zero Mission).

Halo came out just 8 years ago, and, according to Gamespy, 5 years ago. Do we really need a remake of it? I think GamePro suggested that the original Halo be played on Xbox Live. Oh, really? So we need a Burnout 3 remake so that can be played on Xbox Live. Right? (P.S., that already exists)

So what's Final Fantasy VII-2 going to be about? And as for evidence of a Final Fantasy VII remake, there's the technical demo for the PS3, and the PSP prequel. There's a little more, but that's what I remember.

Remaking Zelda I with Phantom Hourglass and maybe even FMV (hey, Metroid Prime: Hunters has it) could be a good idea. Of course, to be well enough, a remake of any game would have to borrow conventions from other remakes. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (A GameCube remake of Metal Gear Solid) and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (A PSP remake of Final Fantasy Tactics) all had the cinematics totally changed; Zelda I had no cinematics; maybe they could throw those in there? Yes, I know that Zelda I is on the VC, but most of what made the game good was the map that came with it and the manual explaining the story. We need to add conventions from A Link to the Past and later overhead games to Zelda I

Atari produced the arcade version of Tetris. Does any more need to be said?

I remember when they remade Castlevania for 64. I personally wasn't impressed. I don't see what the problem is with pushing a title into the next generation innovations of gaming. The problem I hold with remakes is they tend to want to stay "classic". What I don't understand is, if I want to play "classic Castlevania" then I will play it. But any remake needs to seriously think about bringing in new ideas. Otherwise why bother remaking it if all you plan on doing is sticking as much to the original as possible?

I agreed with you actually. The Halo 3 is the second remake. Halo 2 was the first. I really don't see why someone would think they need to remake the original Halo.

The actual death of Sepheroth. That CGI movie of FFVII came out as a sort of epilogue to the story. I have it and it could easily be made into a game. The movie isnt very long and I personally had to watch it a couple of times to fully catch everything because stuff jumps around too much.

Game Informer did an interview with Bungie's Jaime Griesemer (Halo series) and asked him what he would do if he was in charge of the next Zelda title. He mentions that he would have alot more combat oriented playstyle and try to not focus on torch lighting and switch pressing.
His intro movie:
Jaime Griesemer said:
As Link strides confidently into the room (the badass Link from Twilight Princess not the goofy Wind Waker kid.), a stone slab crashes down behind him, sealing him inside.Fire flares up from urns scattered around the large chamber. IN the brief light, Link spots the exit, guarded by two armored Darknuts and a half a dozen skeletal Stalfos. Before they notice his entrance, Link leaps into action.
He lights a bombs and rolls it towards the largest group of Scalfos, blowing up a few and sending the rest running for cover. The Darknuts ignore the explosion, protected by the armor, and draw their massive broadswords. Link boomerang catches one right in the forehead, momentarily stunning it.The other closes for melee range, Link's arrows glance harmlessly off its shield. The Darknut backs Link into a corner, and raises its sword to strike. Link rolls under the swing, coming to his feet behind the towering Darknut. He leaps onto the Darknuts back using his magnetic boots. He wrenches its helmet off and shoves a lit bomb into the empty hole. As the Darknut roars in panic, Link uses his hookshot to swing safely to a nearby balcony. He ignores the muffled boom and crashing armor pieces as he draws his Master Sword and turns to the remaining Darknut...
Now I thought his ideas were great to add some new life into the Zelda series. But alot of readers wrote in to complain that his ideas were unwelcome in the Zelda fanbase basically. I think that adding new ideas to the series would actually elevate the title beyond its current state. I have actually grown a little tired of Link's predictable adventures and would like a more intense feel to be added to the game. I personally think the best way to do this would be to remake the orignal Zelda title. (The first time Ganon kidnaps the princess) and make a solid title. (The Legend of Zelda I, II, III, etc. where the story is continuous.) They could still make heavily oriented puzzle versions through spin-offs. This is where like (OoT and similar would come in.) But thats just my preference.

BTW according to Gametrailers, Zelda I has the same Link from Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Link's Awakening. Basically the whole story was told within the manual. That should be changed. Also, they should add an in-game map like in A Link to the Past. Oh, and please allow Link to move diagonally. I'm going to cry if you don't.

I thought Castlevania 64 was different from Castlevania I. What I thought was Castlevania I with elements borrowed from Symphony of the Night and the later, 2D, games.

At least Chrono Trigger is seeing a remake this year.:D But, EarthBound should also be remade; the 6th and 7th generations of console gaming were introduced gamers to Ness via Super Smash Bros. We need gamers to see where Ness' true origin lies, just like with Pit.

Super Mario RPG should also be remade, but I doubt it. At least Paper Mario 64 is seeing a DS remake, also coming out this year. That game was Gamespot's N64 Game of 2001, so it must be good in some way. There's a VC version, too.

I couldn't agree more. Earthbound was one of my all time favorite RPGs. I would really like to see a new combat model in it though. Perhaps something similar to FFXI Online's combat model. I played the crap out of Earthbound.

I recently replayed earthbound and I must say it hasn't quite aged well.

Yeah, it doesn't have the same appeal as it used to for me as well. I would really like to see a remake. There were rumors of Earthbound being made for the N64 and I believe they had actually started on it, but for some reason I never heard anymore about it.

What the hey, a Final Fantasy XII battle system (or something MMO like) for Mother 4?! No way. I understand that Famitsu gave FFXII a perfect score (even higher than titles like Super Mario 64 and Resident Evil 4), but Gametrailers gave that game an 8/10, and I'm siding with that 8, because from what I've heard FFXII, according to Gametrailers, isn't very fun, and a consensus among most American reviewers is that the game isn't very Final Fantasy. Jeez, Famitsu gives perfect scores to games which have obvious flaws (e.g., Zelda Wind Waker, FFXII, Smash Bros. Brawl), and now I can't even trust you Japanese scum anymore.

I watched Gametrailers' review, and they pointed out that the main characters don't have much motivation. They gave the story a 7/10, even lower than Super Mario Galaxy (OMG), and it's a Final Fantasy game. Yikes. The main character, Vaan, fits right in there, and Balthier's voice acting didn't sound right. And they said how a game that is basically 25 hours long is "extended" to 60 hours due to the frequent enemies. I want to play a Japanese RPG with turn-based combat (active time battle system or not; I don't care), not real-time drek; save that for American drek like Diablo, Baldur's Gate, and Deus Ex.

Okay, flaming American RPGs, just said that for no reason. One must wonder how games like Deus Ex and System Shock 2 fare in Japan; they are a culmination of RPGs and FPSs, which are a traditional Japanese gamer's most and least favorite genres, respectively (read; Famitsu gave Luigi's Mansion a 34/40, Metroid Prime a 33/40, Halo a 32/40, and GoldenEye 007 and 31/40).

BTW EarthBound 64 became Mother 3 on the GBA, only released in Japan.

That's interesting.

I was talking about the MMO FFXI though not XII. FFXI's combat system was nothing like WoW's or any other MMO I can think of. It was turn-based but it sorta looked like when you push pause on any Smash Bros. game. YOu have this little 3d charactor and around him is a circle. That circle is his range for the current attack selected. So you can attack anything in that range. Once you have selected your action for the round, the mob(s) go.
I haven't even seen anyone playing XII before. I missed that one entirely.

I hope they make another Madden remake

Final Fantasy XII's battle system was inspired by the battle systems of most MMOs. Gametrailers probably hates MMOs.

Okay, now that I've seen gameplay footage from EarthBound, I can comment. The game looked a little antiquated, even for 1995. I mean, FINAL FANTASY VI came out the year before, for heaven's sake! And the combat takes place through a first-person view, not unlike many RPGs of the '80s. And there shouldn't just be one-on-one encounters. At least there were no random encounters.

But I still want to play it, as I was only kidding. The setting is very creative IMO, especially for a Japanese RPG (though despite its "modern" setting; I'd have to say that any game involving aliens immediately becomes sci-fi for me, which people say EB is not and contributes to its original setting).

Ah well; a very creative RPG; probably best described as the Kirby/(later) Super Smash Bros. guys trying to make a Final Fantasy (or more likely Ultima/Dragon Quest) game. Just make the battle system more like Final Fantasies IV-IX and I'll be fine. But a best games list actually placed that mess above Ocarina of Time! Seriously! WTH!

16. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
15. Super Mario World
14. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
13. Final Fantasy X
12. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
11. Chrono Cross
10. EarthBound
