Ugh, that feeling I get when I upgrade from Battleships to the missile tug boat cruiser

Is it a missile cruiser?? For the love of god devs, give me a boat. I gotta go to the modders for help.

Indeed, in real the missile cruiser isn't a cruiser but a missile corvette, the Nanucka class if you're interested.

They should have used a proper cruiser or destroyer, like the Arleigh Burke or Kirov classes.

Battleships 'upgraded' to cruisers/destroyers? IRL they were all just decommissioned as being obsolete.

IRL the role of the cruiser as completely changed between WW2 and the contemporary navy, with the Cruiser becoming the standoff ranged anti-ship and coastal bombardment vehicle which is what the Battleship was.

Typical backwards evolution of Civ game design, where "gamification" replaces authenticity.

In civ 3, you had both battleships and missile cruisers available to build at endgame, and battleships were stronger in direct combat while lacking the advanced features of the cruiser (radar, anti-air, anti-submarine, high speed). In an alternate history, battleships might still be in use today - outright replacing them with a ship that has a completely different role is stupid.

This was part of the streamlining of units for the sake of using less units. As many have argued, there were simply too many unused units in CiV. I for one wish we had more units simply because of this said issue and of course ones I have stated earlier regarding muskets to WWII infantry... Maybe we will get lucky and they will address the unit art in a future patch or in an expansion, but as of late this is the direction they decided to go... still a good game; buggy, but good.

I think the OP might be refering to the graphics? The missile cruiser is like half the size of the battleship.

I find the difference in missile animation between the cruiser and the nuclear submarine odd. The first being much, much faster than the second.

Pretty much. When I first saw it I thought, great my battleship became a tug boat. I wish they'd rework it so we could still build legacy units at end game like we could in civ 5. Also give the missile cruiser a more impressive model like in all the past civs.

The OP TomBeard deserves a place in the Great Engineers within Civ VI because every single time into Civ VI I see those missile cruisers I laugh hard, thinking how devs have forgotten to give her a proper graphic ? I thought about a tug-bug or an Eastern Egg but the first patch reiterated the perpetration of a huge crime against the modern Navy.

I had to spend 5 euros to buy a len to be able to see those funny cartoonish missile cruisers and this price should be cut from the game price. Or at least, after the digital download of Civ VI, it would have been fair if UPS had delivered a len to all the customers for free, in bundle with the game.

Another proof that devs live in a different world than the real one, I just hope modders will intervene sooner ratther than later, maybe also tweaking the funny subs which fire missiles to other subs, even a Hollywood Civ VI parody movie wouldn't have done such a " mistake ".

From a gameplay perspective, I like the decision. In V, Battleships were great units when you got them, but kind of faded and became not too useful once the other civs caught up with you in tech. Keeping the battleship line useful throughout the game is a good thing.

From a realism perspective, I can see how it doesn't make much sense, but considering the timing of battleships, I think they do deserve some sort of upgrade, they're just too weak for the super late game.

The problem is the graphic not the concept itself.

Subs firing missiles to other subs is a joke instead.

Well yeah, but IRL so too were many wooden ships and so on. It's just that in Civ, our navy are apparently Transformers who can sail into friendly waters and, whilst still at sea, reconfigure :D

Not many cave men lived to drive armored personel carriers.
