What I want to see!

Sorry for reviving this year-old post of mine, but I just wanted to emphasise on one of my points. It says "What I want to see!" which at the time referred to CiV but now can easily be referring to an expansion pack of CiV.

---

I just want to say that my second point in the original post is what I'd want the most, and what I think would benefit everybody.

Basically, it's like the end-game cinematics you saw in Civ 4. You see your civilization as an animation, a reminder at the end of the game that there you did actually control a thriving empire. But I want this kind of stuff in the middle of the game.

Or there could be some kind of 'Civ View' where you could see animations of your people in their homes. This could be with the Domestic Advisor, or just a button. When you click on it, it shows animations of people using computers, or writing something in your alphabet, or maybe showing them cheering when the city has a happy majority.

Like the 'We love the Prime Minister Day' is followed by an animation of people in the city releasing fireworks and celebrating. Little touches that remind you that you are controlling a civilization.

Who wouldn't like that? My ideas may be going too OTT and too much for some people to handle, but there could just be some scatterings of things that remind you that this is your empire.

So basically, after researching a new tech like Alphabet, you'd see an animation of a man carving out an inscription into a clay tablet or something. Or maybe an animation of a family at home installing their new computer after researching computers.

When you get a "we love the King day" you'd see celebrations of people in the streets of your city in full, animation.

Just 10 second snippets here and there that remind you that this is a civilization you're controlling, not merely counters on a tabletop game.

The rest of the points I made in the original post are redundant with the release of CiV now, but my second point can be applied to the next expansion where you could see these animations.

First of all: If it's for me, I don't mind a "necroposting" at all. It's one of the major benefits of a forum, that you can discuss topics over time! So no "sorry" for bumping a thread ;)

Secondly, and on topic:
I like your idea. However, some developers stated, that they removed WW videos in Civ 5, because they think that gamers just want to watch them once or twice. After that, they don't want to watch these "redundant" videos anymore and rather just play the game without any "interruption". That's the reason why they made these WW-pics, instead of the WW-movies we know from Civ 4 and 2.
And if there's no need for an WW-movie, where would it be for a tech-movie or whatsoever?

Unfortunately it is all about costs. Designing a video means monetary resources for programmers, designers etc. If the developers think it doesn't increase the value of the game in terms of selling it, they simply don't include this feature.

If you ask me, I would like to see some "visual rewards" for the player. There may be some situations, where I skip these videos. But on the other hand, Civ is mainly about following certain strategies. If you went for a certain tech, wonder, SP or whatever, you may want to watch the attached movie for that, even if you have seen it several times. Just because it is a special moment, which stands for the whole strategy that dominated your game :)

Thank you for the great reply.

Unfortunately, yes, animation to such a high standard that we'd expect in 2011 would cost a lot of money to do. Somebody previously in the forum said that if they didn't really see this kind of progress by Civ 6 then they won't be interested in buying it - which is true, because they always need to take a step forward, and can't stay with past all the time.

I think the main notion I would like is just making that civilization experience more authentic, and not limiting it to virtual counters on a virtual game board.

Oh and, good luck on Wednesday! I am a Manchester United fan, so may the best team win! :)

Added flavour in the game is definitely a good thing. It's a large part of what makes the game playable. However, it really would chew up an awful lot of development resources to have an overload of animations. Bringing the game to life is important, but spending development time doing that through improving gameplay should take precedence over the art side of things, IMO.

First of all you are thinking way to much on things that would not really effect gameplay, only visuals. If you focus more on one, well it will change the other negatively. Sure increase visuals with your civ, and look at your people well that could have a bad effect on gameplay. Second of all it is "not your own civ". You are playing as historic civilizations with their historic traits. If you want that "feel" well then play like that civ. Like America adopt freedom and liberty. Yet again though you can't micromanage every to the visual appeal. If you want that play the game Civ:City Rome, although it is an older game the graphics are still good enough. You have the techs and you strategically build your city while watching your citizens go about their daily lives.
