What if Civ was Hex-Based?

Naw, I mean:
hex_squares.JPG

where a warrior could move 2 hexes -- from the red hex to any green hex -- in a single round.

The base vision of a unit would also be that far.

Horsemen would move 4 hexes.

A "march" type promotion that added +1 hex movement would exist.

Railroads: allows "shipping", where you appear in any city on your railroad network.
Good Roads/Railroads: 1/3 per hex
Roads: 1/2 per hex
Plains: 1 per hex
Hills: +1 per hex (+3 for mounted)
Forest: +1 per hex (+2 for mounted)
Jungle: +2 per hex (+5 for mounted)
Mountain: 200% of your movement points

Overflow movement point costs deducts from your movement points next turn.

Ok so you mean units like warriors would get 2 movement points? That's how hex movement works: from the red hex any blue hex is 1 movement away, any green is 2, and each successive ring is +1.

I found this thread and thought to revive it. I play freeciv with a hexagonal grid and it works great, far easier to make good earth maps for, etc.

Really the square grid for most wargames is considered "inferior" and has been for quite some time. Since Civ works like that games, at its core, you should see that a hex grid would be great for it.

If anyone wants to see how it works try freeciv, it is far superior than what Civ has been using. The only reason I play freeciv is because the load times make the game prohibitive late-game.

Too bad the version that contains hexes is pure utter crap. Sadly that is the only thing I like about Civ 5 is the hexes and nothing else.

It has often been said that the switch to hexes was the only good thing in Civ 5. At first I thought the hype over the shape of the tiles was greatly exaggerated and in the end it isn't so important wether we have squares or hexes. Meanwhile I strongly prefer squares.

It's the system we have all become accustomed to it since Civ 1, including things like the familiarity of the BFC etc. And more importantly, it allows us to move in the 8 cardinal directions (N, NE, E etc), which for me adds to realism and immersion. Furthermore, hexes are the standard wargame structure, and I think Civ should distinguish itself from those games. Finally, after the Civ 5 disaster hexes in Civ have been very negatively coined. Their sheer existance in future Civ games could bring back memories of horror and disgust.

I greatly hope Civ 6 will go back to squares (and relinquish all the other "innovations" of Civ 5 as well while they're at it).

Necro-bump for posterity.

It looks like we knew what we were talking about all those years ago.

We did at that, we just didn't realize how low-quality a programming job could be placed around a hex-based system.

Considering that the lead dev of Civ5, who brought in hexes because he was a fanboy of a game series that used them, was fired after Civ5's release, this is a good possibility.

My my still whining about Civ5! People still can't swallow, eh? C'mon, it's past history now. Failure happens. At least, there's still another great game of the franchise...oh yeah...it's da game of this particular subforum.

Don't let the fact that going with 1UPT was a mistake in civ5 mask the fact that going to hexes was a good decision.

It would be disappointing to revert to squares if there were a Civ6, but I doubt that would happen anyway.

I have to say too, that ollj's suggestion of pentagonal tiling from post 49 looks fascinating.
