Afflicted with reason
Suppose the negotiations with Stalin that led to the invasion of Poland had bogged down. Suppose Hitler took two additional years to consolidate his hold on Czecheslovakia while attacking Poland through similar diplomatic means. Or perhaps after Poland had been divided, declaring peace, as Churchill feared. In any event giving his weapons people two more years to develop tanks, planes and submarines.
Suppose further that Roosevelt decides not to seek a third term in 1940. Certainly another Democrat would have been elected, but who, and how well would he have done with the situation.
Finally recall that Japan was already well engaged in China by this time. They would have two more years to campaign facing only a failing British presence in addition to the Chinese. No Flying Tigers, no long Phillipine resistance.
What happens in that world?
