I think I have a rough idea of what it is...but I just don't see the point, won't you fall majorly behind?

The idea is to trade the techs you beeline to for the others once you have the tech first.

Some techs give you free Great People. You can trade them straight away.

Some allow you to start building useful wonders. Trade them when you have nearly finished your wonder.

Liberalism gives you a free tech. You can trade it once you reach it first.

Good tech trading is the key. You want to beeline to alphabet fairly early on, depending on skill level, just so you can catch up.

On Prince and below, I find I can skip guilds completely and just head for cavalry. I can't do that on Monarch though.

If you beeline it means you get a good tech before most other AI's. (thats the plan at least)

So when you get it you can trade it to all the other AI's and get different techs from them. (more if it's very old ones) So most of the time you will research faster this way and not fall behind. ;)

I skip Guilds at emperor, works fine for me :p Don't know about cavalry strategy though, i skip MT as well most of the time ;)

From Dictionary.com:
bee·line (bē'līn')
n. A direct, straight course.

intr.v. bee·lined, bee·lin·ing, bee·lines
To move swiftly in a direct, straight course.
In Civ terms, this means researching technologies that will get you to a specific goal in the fastest manner possible, without any distractions. For example, to beeline Liberalism you would research (or lightbulb) Philosophy, Paper, Education, then Liberalism, all in a row. (It's rarely that simple, but that's the jist of it.)

i also normally skip guilds. although it is good to trade for it later to get to banks. and hopefully then still get to economics first for a great merchant.

that's when they look for food.
When they found it, they fly pretty straight.

Indeed. Bees can fly very fast, but when they are flying fast, they can't turn worth a darn. If you are ever being chased by bees, run very fast (you'll be doing this part anyway) and then turn 90 degrees and keep running. The bees that haven't caught you yet will miss and you'll have time to run for help/shelter.

What do you mean by "to lightbulb"? Context suggests that it means acquire libhtbulbs by non-research methods, but could you be specific?

It means to wholly or mostly research a technology using the science beakers a great person will give you when you "sacrifice" him to learn a tech. The name comes from the fact that the button to do this is a big lightbulb.

Thanks, Fold. Now, besides adjusting the sliders, trading, or earning a free tech, are there any other ways to accelerate research?

Go to your city and manually adjust the worked tiles to maximize research. You can also click the "Prioritize Research" button at the bottom, though a lot of times this will give you scientist specialists when you might want to be working cottages to get them to grow.

Of course the most obvious thing to do to increase research is building more cottages.

You can also use diplomacy. Open borders + known path to city + path to get there (roads, coast line or sea route with required techs) = trade routes. Trade routes = commerce. Commerce = breakers. Late in the game the Civics you choose could affect research quite a bit as good trade routes in your big cities are often worth 3-4 fully mature cottages. Going along with that line of thought, building the Great Lighthouse gives your coastal cities additional trade routes up until Corporation (huge boost on some maps), Corporation itself gives you +1, Airports give you +1, Harbors increase your yield and I think there is a UB that increases trade routes. You can get trade routes really early if you properly explore your continent.

That's about the only thing I can think of.
