what is "tech whoring"?

i'm guessing that "tech hoarding" would be when you hoard up all the techs. and tech whoring would be when you try to get techs before others because you want to sell it to them. or maybe it's the opposite. that you're giving up a lot to be payed in techs, but i think that's less likely.

i'm new to the civ community, though.

I thought it was the practice of buying all the techs for gold, and not do any research yourself...

I'd say it's selling your techs for gold! I've done quite a bit of whoring myself in the past, well tech whoring!

Since a whore receives money for their *ahem* services, it naturally follows that a tech whore sells techs and receives Gold or other considerations

haha you all are hilarious. I thought that "tech whoring" had become a familiar term to civ folks for some type of strategy (like "ICS") so i thought it had a set familiar meaning, but maybe not...

yeah. did you read it somewhere or are you just looking to introduce the term to the community. ;)

I'll have to disagree. While a whore is one who receives money for their services, "whoring" takes up a new definition. If you look up "whoring" in urban dictionary it defines it as overindulging in something, or so repetitively that it's annoying.

There's the familiar term attention whore, which does not mean someone is selling off their attention, it means they are overindulging in attention.

Therefore, I take tech whoring to simply mean you are overinduling in techs- you do whatever it takes to get through the tech tree as fast as possible so you get an edge.

The way I've understood it: you purchase a "new" tech from the "tech leader(s)". You then immediately turn around and sell it to the rest of the other civilizations.... Ideally recouping your investment, and turning a tidy (read: huge) profit in the process.

@ Padma: Thank you! Finally someone who knows what they are talking about. Unlike everyone else posting thus far, myself included... :)

To support my case, may I present the following references:

2. whoring

to use in a non-sexual reference; as in partaking in alot of something; OVERINDULGING
He was whoring all of my potato chips and didn't leave any for me.
or
Kyle was sitting on his ass TV-whoring all weekend, and didn't hang out with us.

2. Whore

Someone who does something excessively.

IMO it's all about doing no science yourself and using the advantage the AI has at higher levels against him. Just let hi, build cities and discover techs and then you get trade for them and take over ít's cities.

I think minger asked the questiion because it may have been mentioned in a recent post somewhere on this site. It has been mentioned over at Apolyton

The Following questions cropped up at Apolyton,

Harrier UK

"With regards the AI does it still cheat on Technology trades during the AI turn??

I am refering to the Technology Trade an AI civ would offer during the AI part of the turn.

You were the only civ to own a particular technology. You traded it (foolishly to one AI civ during the AI turn).

When your next turn started - you then found nearly every AI civ had that technology.

This AI cheat stopped me from trading with the AI when they proposed deals. I always said no - then tried to trade during my turn - (With a few developed civs this became tedious, lots of mouse clicks - as each trade closure took you back to the main screen. )"

"Solver, is the civ3 game strategy of tech whoring still viable? I hope not...because that could be a workaround for the ICSer. (Though giving gold to the AI might end up allowing it to create more cities, as it would have more gold to pay for maintenance...)"

Solver replied:

"Tech whoring is absolutely and completely gone. More in part 3."

To me that is good news. :)

To me it means the process in Civ3 where you just about HAD to sell a tech to all aI if you sold it to one. Otherwise next turn they all would have it anyway.

You ended up selling it way below value just to prevent the aI from selling it way below value in thier turn.

A whore is usually one who gives it away free or very cheaply- (not to be confused with a prostitute who sells it at market value or above. ;) )

Thus tech 'whore'.

This has to be the best answer yet.

I think in this case somebody thought they heard the word whoring when they really heard the word hoarding, and submitted it to the urban dictionary thinking that they've heard something new. I'm not a teenager anymore or even college age so I do not know all of the modern slang but if the word whoring is being used in this fashion regularly then it is the result of a misunderstanding at some point.

That being said I think in the Civ context tech whoring refers to getting a new tech and then turning around and selling it to every AI player.
