what is "tech whoring"?

That being said I think in the Civ context tech whoring refers to getting a new tech and then turning around and selling it to every AI player.

Or the opposite - that is during the AI turn an AI Civ asks you to sell it a unique tech you have just researched. Then the AI Civ sells it to all the other AI civs. So when your turn starts you can not sell it to anyone else.

I think in this case somebody thought they heard the word whoring when they really heard the word hoarding, and submitted it to the urban dictionary thinking that they've heard something new.

It's definitely not that simple. I've heard the term used to mean essentially overindulging for many different things. A great example everyone knows about is the one I gave earlier: an attention whore. When you call someone an attention whore it has nothing to do with money or selling services for cheap.

rschissler has the right idea. That did happen a lot in civ3. As for definitions I'm with vorius.

Remember there is a difference between a tech whore and tech whoreing. A tech whore sells on the cheap as rschissler states. Tech whoreing comes from the phrase "to go whoreing"; that is to visit a whore and pay for services, thus "buy tech" in civ.

This is not to be confused with the classical "tech slut", who takes a taste of every tech available with no consequece for the future (such as building the great library as fasta s possible and then setting your research at zero until it runs out, thereby getting lots of tech and gold, but risking future stagnation).

Also found in some urban legends is the "tech tramp" who sells very old low techs to civs which have been left behind in history and cannot profit from the more "up town" tech whores.

Not to be mistaken with the "tech skank" who indulges only in the filthy "war" techs. Such a skank is often mistakes herself for a "tech call-girl" is is far beyond a skank in class, focussing on the cultural and scientific.

In the end we find many "tech tart" (or trollop depending on your area code) whose main fancy is showing up the other "tech strumpetts". In the race for the leading "tech scarlette-woman" we find that "tech hookers" tend to win out against "tech working girls" if only for their connection with "tech harlots".

I hope this has cleared everything up.

why aren't all these definitions in the urban dictionary? :)

really, though, i think the urban dictionary is kinda cluttered. useful but cluttered with nonsense stuff. stuff that maybe 3 people use. or sometimes people just think it's funny to make a certain definition even though it's not really in use. not saying the site's useless or anything, though.

I noticed that bit in Solver's preview too but I wish he (or someone) could elaborate. The whole system of how techs are traded and valued is a bit wacky at times in Civ3 and it'd be interesting to know how it's changed.

There's also the larger fact that the "urban dictionary" isn't a standardized reference by any stretch of the imagination.

Never heard of it. What's an attention whore?

I've heard it before. I assume that it is a person who will do anything for attention.

Regarding 'tech whoring' I think the cheap trading, spread-all-the-tech-around idea makes the most sense to me. I hate working hard for my techs when it seems like all the AIs are working together :)

I like that we are going to be able to turn of tech trading altogether, if we want! (at least, I think so). No more whoring for sure then.

One last opinion... I think some confusion has come up between the words "whore" and "whoring". I would say the "whore" is the person giving it up for money, while "whoring" refers to overindulging, ie seeking out whores. This explains both the examples posted previously: "attention whore" and "whoring the chips, not giving me any".

Fun discussion,
Grant

Oddly enough, I've heard that referred to as being an attenion slut, not whore. As for 'whoring the chips,' that sounds to me like it should be 'hoarding the chips,' which makes sense. Like one of the other posters, though, I'm not all that current with modern slang.

"Tech Whoring" refers to someone who seeks scientific acheivement above all other considerations.

"Tech Whoring" will be MORE viable in Civ4 (imo) than previously possible because of the alternate paths to victory (ie, cultural, etc.).

GENERALLY "Tech Whoring" succeeds as a strategy because it allows everything else to fall into place. In Civ, there's great incentive to "tech up" --- more city efficiency, better production, more dangerous military units.

Everyone tries to get better tech; the "tech whore" does almost nothing but "tech up."

ALTERNATE DEFINITION: Someone with better tech than you in a multiplayer game ;)

It has not occured to anyone that the actual word "whore" is not censored by CFC even though it is just as offensive as ****.

, it naturally follows that a tech whore sells techs and receives Gold or other considerations

Could you please expand on the latter ...

Can you be more specific? Do you mean ****, ****, or ****?

**** would be a better word for it. If I told you that I was a tech ****, you wouldn't believe me, would you?

but we are getting off topic....

The important thing is that the way the civ4 diplomacy works, I really wonder if I DO sell my tedch to one civ, that the next turn EVERYBODY, inclding my enemies, would have it and I might as well have sold it (or given it to them for bettering relations). Knowing this is the system at least in civ3, I would sell my tech to everyone because otherwise it would be a waste since they will get it anyway, not because I want the money so much. In fact I may "tech slut" as it were, when I only want to be a "tech woman-of-easy-virtue".

Does any game tester know if this is the case? Or do I have to resort to being a tech ****?

[for those of you who's first language is not english, replace all *** with "smurf" and you will be fine.]

Sorry, Padma! :mischief: I actually wrote four stars all those times! I will behave now. :salute:

Hehe. I remember my first experience with a tech whore...

I saw that Civ A was about to crush Civ B. So I felt sorry for Civ B and decided the easiest way to give him an edge to defend himself was to share all my advanced techology! Surely with tanks he would be able to survive...

Sure enough, he did survive, but by giving away all my tech to everyone else. We need an End User Liscence Agreement for our tech sharing :)

You might not get gold for the tech you trade, you might get a tech or multiple techs in return or a diplomatic activity. Beyond that...get your mind out of the gutter. :mischief:
