What is the best RTS (Real Time Strategie) game?

or, better yet, a sequel:D

Tough to say for me. Starcraft: Broodwar was the best by far, but I just got WCIII a few weeks ago and so far I'd say it's a contender. I haven't played with the expansion yet, but I've heard it adds more strategy to the game, making it even a bit more fun (probably more like Starcraft, since many people seemed to prefer it).
Was not crazy for the AoE series at all. Way more civs, but they were all practically identical except for graphics and maybe one special unit. I like the variation in units and tactics that blizzard's games have, and I find it amazing that they manage to make them so different, yet keep them well balanced.

StarCraft is easily the best RTS game.

When it comes to balance and still difference between the Races, thats the best game ever.
When it comes to game design, this game beats all the other RTS's three times over.

And it's very good in SinglePlayer as well as MP.

I never played the game as much as many others though.

Weird but true, that's all... all my friends are also USSR winners and allies loosers...
This is so true that I could glue my tongue to the wall if it turns out that most players played with the allies in MP.

I would have to say two of my favs are Warcraft II and C&C Tiberian Sun.

Personnaly, I love Age of Empires I, Rise of Rome Expansion.
I also had fun with AoE II, Dune 200, Emperor: Battle for Dune, Warcraft III, Dungeon Keeper (I & II), Stronghold, Cossacks (original & expansion)...
And yours? What's your favourite RTS game?

Finally, a true AOE1 fan. I've been looking long and hard for you... Care for a game? :)

Finaly I played Starcraft! After several years from it's release (1997), it is still a great and addictive game. The campaign is just incredible.

Things better than AOE:
- the concept of the campaign;
- three races completly different from one another and with different playing styles;
- rally points;
- different units cost different population space.

Things worse than AOE:
- no random maps.

In the end, it's difficult to choose the best between these two games.

Thankyou for that. I know its your first post but its usually nice if you actually put some reasoning behind your post. Like why you don't like it. Also just because there is a wide range of smilies, doesn't mean you have to use them all.

Rise Of Nations right now
I enjoyed Age of series as well

Goodness...I have to CHOOSE? Ah what the hey...

Age of Empires series - love it, so easy to learn and can keep you occupied for hours. Great fun from both games and their expansions.

Shogun: Total War - just got back into it. Amazing battles, fun to backstab your neighbouring...allies. Medieval won't work, curse it, but I have heard great things about it...and let's not mention the upcoming Rome sequel ;)

Caesar 3 - My favourite of all the series. I prefer it to Sim City as well, for some reason - possibly because I actually understand how to play it.

And finally, for I don't think it has gotten a mention from anyone yet, but Homeworld could possibly be my favourite of all. A wonderful single-player storyline, gorgeous visuals (even today, I'd argue) and it even worked on my run-by-hamsters-on-wheels computer back when it was first released. A marvel of a game.

Trouble with Caesar 3 is that you can spend all the time in the world building up a nice fine city, but then when one thing starts to go wrong, it can easily cause a catacylsmic chain of events that destroys you. It requires a lot more patience than most RTS games.
