Hi... I am really a Civ noob in most ways. I manage to get my behind handed to me even on noble difficulty. I am more of a laidback and peaceful kind of player. But nomatter what I do enemies start ganging up on me after a while. I normally get a religion very quick and in beginning that helps me alot. But for some reason others get their religion spread so much quicker than mine. I cannot build quick enough it seems.

So if I am not in the major religion gang I am screwed right? Any tips on how to make the AI more friendly to me. They always seem to hate me nomatter what. Do I always say no to open borders ect?

Thanks,

Where to start with help...OK, may I ask what civ, leaderhead, map type, game speed, modules (if any), etc. you are running? That information helps a lot (i.e. running Snail games without Early Buildings is an easy way to get overwhelmed, especially with Revolutions and Start as Minors). As for religion, the AI loves Open Borders, and spreads it that way or it seems like the civ that gets Stonehenge gets an early religion and spreads it through an early shrine. It is OK to say "no" to open borders, however, saying "no" to demands adds up unless you are running Realistic Diplomacy, which may be your problem.

Also, check out this thread for a few tips and tricks.

Thanks,

Civilization: India
Leader: Asoka
Maptype: Scenario Earth 23 preset siv standard size
Gamespeed: Epic

I am also using no barbarians, revolutionmod, advanced diplomacy and revolutionmod exposed + modmod of Afforess "A New Dawn" i think it is called.

My initial thought is that India starts off badly and with a slow start when it comes to city growth. That way I will have slower building in the beginning when spreading of religion is important. Also I am a bit harsh on turning down open borders maybe. But everyone seems to want open borders and having open borders with everyone is not good either is it??? Or what is the best way to choose? Decide who your friends is and like the same nations they do???

Thank you. I think part of the reason you are having difficulties is because of revolutions, since it increases the game's difficulty until you completely understand how to use it against the AI, which results in it just being game changing. Rise of Mankind also is designed for Huge maps at Marathon speed; it is likely that you are getting overwhelmed due to the game speed. Also, I would also recommend running through a few random map games before undertaking the Earth map.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to open borders is asking "what can I gain and what will the AI do." If the AI is an opposing religion and either has a shrine or a religious personality, then prepare to be overwhelmed with missionaries, however, if an AI is your religion and your religion has not completely spread, sign open borders and finish the job before another AI converts him. Also, open borders provide a diplomacy boost over time, which is useful when trying to peacefully gain a vassal or push a neutral civ into pleased territory.

Worst comes to worst, and running the game of Marathon with random map practice (or after random map difficulties), try running an Ancient Age advanced start. That way, you can avoid that initial Worker building slowdown. Personally, I like running Ancient Advanced start with Rev., Barbs (for Barb Civ), and Start as Minors to represent a 10,000 BC start.

Thanks for your advices on gamespeed and mapsize. Yeah I recon I gotta understand what revs. do completely. Any tips on that part on how to use it to my advantage???

Also how is it best to keep the peace with AI even if he is stronger and other religion? Just give them all they demand?? Only way it seems?

so you are a builder correct?

what religion do you usually go for? I typically find Hellenism delicious because of massive science second Hellenism Holy building + Sankore +Spiral+ Sistine if you get it adds +3 science +2 gold +6 culture, so you build a city and caravan rush every Hellenistic building, for big benefits

Yeah I am a builder. Not really into total warfare.

I am not very good at this game so I tend to get Hinduism since that is easiest to get and stick with that. What you mean by rush every hellenistic building? Build as quickly as possible or slavery?

Also another thing that tend to get me into trouble is the revmod in general.

Example: I sometimes also like to play Japanese. Ok I build my first cities on the island of Japan. They are doing great. But when I try to expand on mainland withing 30+ turns my new cities rebel on me. This is normally by the time I got Monarchy. I can read that they rebel because of junta, colony, monarchy ect.

What is the best way to prevent this from happening. All I got really is Monarcy and few other civics available to me. Do I wait for Republic to be available before expanding outside Japan? Thing is that I dont wanna wait for the other nations to start grabbing the good spots.

Also, Is there a list or something explaining what civics works good together and what is really really bad?

there is a unit called "Caravan" it is usually used to send to a city for gold but you can send it to one of your cities and use it for production, what I mean is before you build a city make as many caravans as you can, use them to escort the worker along with a missionary, after you build it use the missionary and then the buildings,

you get a lot of good stuff this way, like some good culture so it will expand fast! gold to help pay for it and some science just for the heck of it, +you could try to get the Apostolic Palace for 2 production per building so that adds up to 4 production! BTW Island civs are BAD! choose a mainland one, because over seas is a huge penalty
