What is the Support combat bonus?

I think support is +2 melee strength for each adjacent friendly unit, and flanking gives an enemy -2 melee for each adjacent melee unit of yours

Yup, +2 for each adjacent unit be it archer or scout. However this bonus is ignored by archers shooting at you which is one reason archers are OP.
The square promotion of spears means they provide +4 not +2

Flanking bonuses also work the same way, ranged can help toward other units flanking by providing +2 but get no flanking benefit with their shots

Beelining Military tradition is often a good move.

@Victoria I do remember you talking about support bonus with ships. Do you have a link to that forum? Having trouble finding it myself.

But if I have caravels and scouts on the same tile do I get a +4 support bonus. Each unit should give me a +2 support bonus, right?

There has been 3 threads I have mentioned it in, I'll try and do a pic tonight that has a land scout, a sea scout and a sea scout plus caravel and see what it looks like, I have not tried 2 in the same square. Nice thought.

It's a shame you cannot see your own support bonuses

@CPL_Yoshi yup... you are right!
+2 support from a land scout
+2 support from an embarked scout
+2 support from a caravel
+2 support from an embarked scout in the same square as the caravel

For SP play I have noticed the religious civs will happily jump up to the modern era without taking military tradition. At that stage of the game when the civic cost 1 turn to get they they are lacking both flanking and support combat bonuses. A bit crazy.
