What is up with this latest upgrade to Civilization 5?

My background. I had Civ 5 since it's release day. I have been playing Civ since the first game on the Apple IIE in 1980's.

Now to my query:

Civ 5 is automatically updated via Steam. In this month June 2011, I have noticed the latest change. It sucks!

I have tired different civs and many games. I have the same problem that occurs.
You can't generate money to stay out of the red. Once your in the red, Your money is taken from all your other sources. You will lose troops, research will stop and you civ will just stagnate until the AI decides to launch multiply waves of most all the other players against you.

I finally, tried to play as the Egyptians, and built only marketplaces tiles instead of farmland. And no roads. Even before 1800AD, the game just fell apart.

Civ 5 is very frustrating to play because of these changes.

Anyone else have something to add?
Any solutions to this?
I want to play Civ 5, but not if it Dorked-up! :crazyeye:

Solutions? Sort out your economy! If you only build villages, you won't get food. If you don't get food, you don't get population. If you don't get population, you won't get science. If you don't get science, you won't progress through the eras. If you don't progress through the eras, you'll never reach commerce and the massive boom in money that usually comes once you hit the industrial age.

No roads = no trade routes.

Sell your luxuries if you have to.

This is not something that is a problem with the update man. What you are describing is 100% your fault. If you want to browse the strategy forum or ask questions there while providing more detailed info about your games, or maybe even posting save games, I'm sure everyone would be happy to help you :D

Sorry, maybe I should made this clearer.
Your solution is the normal way that I play.
The way I described in the OP, was a trial test run of Civ 5.
After the normal way was failing, I just had connecting roads to network the cities.
I found that building roads & railways, wiped-out my money intake.Multiply games with different civs, resulted in the same problem.

I am unsure of how to fix this using the normal way I play the game.

Please note that maintenance costs on road and railways have been changed.
Civic policies have been changed.
The Al is different.

It's difficult to say for sure, but it sounds from your posts like you've been building too many roads, which is a sure-fire way to fiscal insolvency. Only build roads between your cities using the most direct routes possible, otherwise you will bankrupt yourself. (You don't need roads to connect resources). There is no way to "fix" this, unless you mod away road & rail costs -- it's how the game works now.

Ya, I think you nailed that one. I have always built roads/railroad on "EVERY" tile available. This new change has had a financial crippling effect. It total ruined my style of game play.

That's it, then. Unlike older Civs, roads & rails provide no bonuses to tiles - they only speed movement. So there's no benefit at all to putting them in each tile, and a huge downside because the expense will absolutely sink your economy no matter what else you do. (Although it's worked this way in Civ V from the start, the patch just tinkers with the numbers a little).

Really? In the only game I've played after the patch (still in progress) I haven't focused on gold at all and I have 5'000g. Don't know the year but it's about musketeers time.

I only build tradeposts in 1 city, and I already had lots of money before doing that.

But I can't help you any further, like I said, I didn't focus at all, it just happened.

Playing egypt in prince tho, since I wanted to try the new patch in an easy setting.

That wasn't part of the patch. It's been like this since the beginning of CiV. Don't build roads everywhere; only to link cities and move troops.

He said he tried to build no roads at all. Your road network gives you lots of money, you need to connect all cities through roads.

Why would you build roads on every tile available? It's a wonder you were ever in the green.

I guess it is the natural progression of my game style. I have been playing civ since the '80s and up until June 2011, this has NOT been a problem. Like a mentioned before, this new change/update is different.

Also, please note. The AI is far more aggressive. I am playing on Easy mode (Chieftain) and the computer players are mobilizing mass armies to destroy me. Alarming quickly.
How is the computer able to build so many units?
Is there not a cost and penalty for large armies?

Also noted. The State Cities are no longer passive. They are sending out units onto the map.

1. The reason why your economy is down is that you don't know how to manage it... It's not the patches fault at all.
2. The AI is not that much more aggressive, the AI has just been improved so that the AI actually knows how to do something.
3. The AI doesn't build that many units at chieftain. Maybe you are just playing on a difficulty level too high? Go down a notch and try again.

Sure, you can still play using your playstyle, but you just have to use lower difficulty levels.

The AIs are sacrificing constructing buildings & wonders to produce those early armies; you'll notice later on that wonders which used to be snapped up immediately by the AIs remain available for you to build a lot longer.

You've been playing Civ for that long and you are struggling on Chieftain?

Newest patch in Civ 5 didn't change the road maintenance, but like many people have said in this thread, if you stick to just building roads only to connect cities in the quickest way possible, it won't bankroll you too much (you might even make gold from your bigger cities). You also no longer need to connect resources, you only need to improve them.

I can recommend Bibor youtube channel and for you to look up the how to play on emperor series. You probably shouldn't jump into emperor any time soon, but it will give you most of the basics to build up a good start. http://www.youtube.com/user/biborkiraly?ob=5

*(Building a big army and razing enemy cities also works)

I'm going to say what I always say: Puppets, puppets, puppets.

Puppets = Gold.

Take a few cities, trade post every tile you can and sit back to watch the gold roll in.

Once you hit economics, you'll have more gold than you'll need.

Also, sell your lux to the AIs. Build some happiness buildings and then sell your lux. If you work it right, you should profit, even after building maintenance is considered.

Sell open borders too. Open borders is obviously a commodity the AIs want, so meet that demand with supply.
