Is it possible for you to build roads on Ocean terrain? I never thought you could (without cheating), but the AI went ahead and did it in my GOTM7 game... What is going on here?

It looks like a river square to me.

It is possible to build roads and railroads on ocean squares. From the Civ2 cheats section:

You can build roads and railroads on the ocean. Get a settler or and engineer into a vessel, go to the position in which you would like to build the road or railroad. Press R. You will gain the benefits of having roads and railroads on the ocean of extra trade.

oh..lol, you are right. I just have never seen a river made up of just one square

It bloody looks like a lake to me and you cant build over river squares anyway can you?

U can build to river squares, but youåll have to invent "Bridge Building" first.

Quicksilver: If you double-click on the tile when it is empty it should tell you what it is.

Thunderfall: I've heard of the road on the ocean trick, but I did not think that could be done in CivII. Was this available in early versions before they added patches or something?

hey wait a min. is the build road on ocean only a cheat option or do you simply put an engnr in a boat activte him and press R ?!?

Don't you all have a "view" option on your toolbar at the top
of the Civ screen? It is between the "Kingdom" & the "Orders" Menus on our game.
Clicking on the second choice "View Pieces", produces a blinking highlight
around a square that can be moved with the same keys as a unit.
As the highlight is moved, each square's Location & Terrain type
as well as any improvements or specials are listed in the "Viewing Pieces"
portion of the Status Screen.

growthudemocracy,

The Ocean Square Road Trick has been listed as a cheat everywhere we
have seen it mentioned. To add to what Kev said we can only speak for Civ II for Mac's & It can not be done in that version.
You get a dialogue box with the message
"That task can not be preformed here."

That's also what I remember. I think it was the latest patch that took it away. I know it doesn't work in the latest version of MPG anymore.

To be honest, I never try those cheats in the cheat codes section. I gathered them from cheat sites.

The road on water thing is from Civ1.It can't be done in civ2.

Most of those "cheats" are not actually cheats. They are tools that be can used only with cheat mode activated. For scenarios
